We used to think that 'cardio' exercise was necessary to lose weight and improve fitness and for over 30 years that is what many people have done. But as our knowledge of the human body increases the importance of our muscular system is coming out of the shadows. No-one ever gives much of a thought to their muscles. They are there in the background like faithful servants never complaining and always on the job. That is till we start to lose them.....from the mid 20's slowly but surely they are siphoned from us and as we get older that loss accelerates. This loss is what drags our health into a downward spiral. Our modern inactive lives have us sitting most of the day....in our cars, at our places of work, in our leisure time and on the couch watching television. Most of us get through the day without ever having to 'move a muscle'. But the strength of our overall muscular system is of the utmost importance as it is really the engine of the human body. Its health determines whether the food we eat is burnt up for energy or stored as excess body fat. If we allow our muscles to become weak and flabby they cannot burn as much fuel (calories) and it is easy to become overweight. We used to think that the only way to burn this off was with slow endurance type activity but now we know a better faster and more efficient way. Tone up our friends our muscles and get them burning more fuel for us. They are really like an army of factory workers gobbling up every scrap of glucose from our blood stream, but only if they are strong and toned. The more toned they are the more fuel they need just to exist as they are highly active tissue requiring a lot of maintaining. Up to 50 percent of our body weight is made up with our muscle tissue so it is easy to see how effective it can be in helping us lose weight by boosting the metabolic rate every minute of the day and night. It is strange how many people are afraid of muscles but not afraid of excess body fat spilling out from their clothes. The fat is the enemy not the muscle tissue and is what spoils our looks and threatens our health. So, if you are prepared to have a change of attitude and allow yourself the luxury of a more powerful body engine (your metabolism) you will be nicely surprised when over a period of time you will lose excess body fat and gain a strong toned body. Your energy levels will increase and you will feel and look your best. Remember thought that only strength training exercise will do this. Repetitive low intensity activities are great as part of an active lifestyle but you need your proper exercise to give you fat loss and a sleeker, firmer body.
