What are your views on getting older and the aging process? Do you believe that fatigue, low energy and aches and pains are inevitable as more candles accumulate on your birthday cake? If so, do you also believe that we should 'take it easy' and 'slow down' as we get older as we have been taught to do? That may have been the way of our parents and grand parents and we witnessed what happened to them. Many ended up in nursing homes due to their frailty. Imagine the horror of having to spend the last 5 -10 years or more of your life having to have other people lift you up from a chair and do simple things like feed and dress you. But we now know differently, aging itself is not responsible for becoming incapacitated. Our sedentary world is responsible and our indifference and apathy to the importance of our strength and fitness is what is responsible for the loss of function. If you do nothing to stop it we each lose around one half pound of muscle tissue each year starting in the mid 20's. This loss doubles after age 50 and brings with it a cascade of health problems physically, mentally and emotionally. Although we all know the importance of proper exercise, most of us choose not to bother. You would have to be living under a rock not to have heard about the importance of proper exercise so why are people not listening? It is hard to imagine why anyone would want to risk becoming one of the weak, sick and frail that we see all around us. We now have the knowledge and plenty of proven information about how we each can avoid becoming a burden on our families, our communities and our world. The simple answer is 'work at keeping your strength throughout your entire life'. The easy way to do this is to have a proper strength training program set up for you by a fitness professional and perform it 2-3 times each week. This is so little to give to get so much back in return. Like a much higher quality of life with reduced risk of disease, a firmer, leaner, better looking body, reduced stress, more energy, better mental and emotional health and being a happier and more contented person. All of this for two to three hours per week, how easy is that? So much for so little, where could you get a better deal anywhere? Give it a go and see for yourself. As well as your proper exercise program you could even try and become more active in your leisure time as well. Give it a bit of time and add little extra bits of activity in slowly. Remember you can't light a big fire. Before long you will find that you crave this physical movement. It allows your body to release its calming chemicals to soothe and distress you. It is like medicine and all you have to do is give it time to work its magic. Our bodies are meant to be active – very active – no one has ever regretted a workout. Just ask someone who does it regularly.
