Scientists are constantly finding new way to get the skin cleaned of impurities and hopefully get rid of those annoying red and black spots that make your face look unclean. While a variety a treatments have been available, some have recently caused a motif for concern, prompting for the development of new, safer treatments.

Treating acne while it still is in an early stage can mean avoiding permanent scarring. Here are some new therapies that will surely help those people that cannot use or do not respond to traditional treatments:

Light and laser therapies have become widely used in recent years for a variety of conditions and ailments; for acne they reach the deep layer of the skin, without damaging the skin's surface. Here are the most common types of light therapy:

- Diode laser therapy is a laser that has the ability to destroy the sebaceous glands, while not harming the surface of the skin. By destroying the sebaceous glands, the diode laser therapy effectively controls acne. Even though the treatment can lead to redness and swelling and is fairly painful, the pain can be reduced with the use of an anesthetic.

- The heat energy therapy, together with pulsed light therapy destroys the Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) and decreased oil production by shrinking the sebaceous glands. Even though the treatment may lead to redness of the skin, this side effect is only temporary.

- Blue light therapy is a process through which the skin is exposed to a blue light of low intensity that destroys P. acnes. This treatment should be done repeatedly, because the acne bacterium multiplies rapidly.

- Photopneumatic therapy uses a vacuum-like machine to suck out the dead skin and oil that lays in the sebaceous glands.

- Photodynamic therapy uses topical medications, as well as light therapies. For the latter to work more effectively, medication is applied to the skin before starting treatment. As with other similar therapies, side effects may include redness, swelling or crusting.

A different type of treatment for curing acne is steroid injections, which are usually used to fight cysts and nodules; this way, the ailments take a few days to cure, as opposed to taking weeks without treatment. Similarly to other treatments, side effects may occur, such as a thinner skin, appearance of visible blood vessels on the surface of the skin or a lighter skin tone. Steroid injections are meant for serious acne problems and are not meant for a continuous treatment.

Microdermabrasion is an emerging therapy through which crystals are blown onto the skin by the use of a hand-held device. The crystals do not damage the skin, but merely polish it gently. After this, a vacuum removes the crystals and the polished skin cells, leaving your skin exfoliated and your pores unclogged. This procedure is done by a specialist at a beauty salon so make sure you choose wisely.
