If you have been overweight for some time then you know how frustrating it can be. Once you get it strong and healthy it will burn up the food you eat for energy rather than piling into fat stores on your body.

You do not have to starve yourself and you do not have to do hours of low intensity 'cardio' activity. If fact those things are the very worst things you can do if you wish to reboot a sluggish metabolism. Whether you like the idea or not you need to build back that lost muscle and there is only one way to do this - strength training exercise.

Your strength training program is your secret weapon in the battle against weight gain. There really is no other way you can lose the weight for the long term. No matter what your age is that is not going to make a difference. So, telling yourself that you are too old is really just another excuse.

Strength training is so effective only 2-3 sessions are needed each week if they are done with the right level of intensity (degree of effort). You should have a fitness professional set up your program and show you how to do the exercises correctly. Your program should also be changed and updated regularly and your results monitored. If you try a hit and miss approach you may be disappointed with your results.

If you are a woman do not worry about 'getting bigger' or 'bulking up'. If you are overweight you are probably a little bit of both of these things already. Your muscles are your friends and the only way that fat is going to be burnt off your body is through your muscle tissue. There is no other way. Fuel (calories) is burnt in muscle cells and if they have become weak and flabby they will simply not be very effective in keeping you slim.
