We may wonder if exercise is really worth the effort. You hear stories that claim that exercise does not burn many calories noting that even jogging for twenty minutes only burns around 180 calories which is the equivalent of two thin slices of bread. What this statement fails to say is that the purpose of exercise is that you get to burn more calories both during and after exercising. What you do in the gym should not be focused on the calories you burn there it should be focused on getting your body burning more calories every single minute of the day and night You want exercise to stimulate your metabolism so that everything you do during the day - sitting at your desk, cooking dinner, grocery shopping burns more calories than a person who does not exercise. So for this to happen the exercise undertaken has to be the right exercise. Any old type of movement will not do this job. The only way to boost your metabolism for the long haul is to keep your muscles toned and the more the better. Muscle is what drives the metabolic rate and it needs to be healthy and in good condition for the health of your body and especially if losing weight is a goal of yours. This means strength training exercise directly targeting the muscles against resistance so they become stronger is vital. Muscle tissue is highly active tissue, making high energy demands but only when toned. Let your muscular system become weak and flabby and you can kiss goodbye to a fast fuel burning engine. A sluggish fat storing body is what you will get when you allow the health of your muscles to deteriorate. So, when you exercise all of your focus should be on your proper strength training program. If you want to do the old long slow stuff like walking, jogging or cycling these are recreational activities so save them for your recreation time when you can enjoy them. They should never take the place of a proper muscle strengthening program, ever. Muscle loss is the number one bio-marker of the aging process and the loss of it is also the main reason why a person becomes overweight and unhealthy. If time is limited that time should be spent on strength training so you get the most 'bang for your buck'. This is good news as the most common reason why people do not exercise is a 'lack of time'. Just 2-3 sessions each week is needed but it does need to be done right. You do not even need to do any 'cardio' type activity if time is short. Just put some effort into your program and you will get all the heart/lung benefits you could ever possibly need. Once you restore lost muscle tissue and tone up what is already there you will change your life for the better. Proper strength training exercise is the fastest way to lose weight, increase strength, change your body shape, improve your health, and become more energetic, productive and alive. No other method is comparable.
