There are many areas that you must focus on when building an Internet business and list building is one of the most important focuses that you can have for long term success. There are many parts to a successful online business including traffic generation, product creation, search engine optimization, web site design and copy writing. All of these areas require a focused effort in order to achieve lasting results. However, list building is the one piece of your business that will bring the greatest return on your time and investment.

There are many that will tell you that you can make money online without a list and that may be true, for the short term. But if you are planning on building a long term business that will provide you an income for years to come, list building should be a primary focus for your business. You can make money online if you have a list even if you don't have a web site or a product. But it is hard to make money from a product without a web site and it's hard to make money from a web site without a product.

There was a time when you could easily send your traffic directly to a sales page and convert a decent percentage of those visitors into buyers. That is becoming more difficult everyday because there is a lot of competition in almost any niche that has enough traffic to be profitable. It has become too easy for the visitor to click the back button and keep on searching. If you sent that visitor straight to your web site or sales letter without capturing their contact information you have likely lost them for good.

But if instead, you send you visitors to a web site that allows you to gain their trust so that they give you their contact information, you now have someone that you can offer value to. You can gain their trust by giving value through your content and you will have a much better chance to eventually convert that prospect into a paying customer. By repeating this process over and over again you will build a list of repeat buyers that you can market to for years to come.

In the arena of Internet business you only really have two assets, your web site and your list. There isn't really anything else in an Internet business that is a salable asset and that is because your web site and your list can both generate ever increasing revenue as they grow and mature. If you want to build a truly long term Internet business, focus your efforts on building and nurturing your subscriber list. List building will be the one part of your business that will become the most valuable over time.
