First of all, what exactly is VoIP? VoIP is short for voice over IP. IP stands for Internet protocol. This technology allows the voice to be converted into data that can be transmitted over the Internet using the IP protocol, and at the other end, the data is converted back to voice. In other words, we can now have voice conversations with one another over the Internet. Obviously, this is great news for everyone, especially for those who make oversea phone calls on a regular basis. Traditionally, overseas phone calls are only possible through common land lines. Anyone who wants to make a call to a foreign country will have to pay hefty phone bills. Usually, fees are charged by the minute. So the longer the duration of the call, the higher the fees. This is very annoying for those who want (or need) to have lengthy conversations. For example, a parent may miss a child who is studying overseas, and would like to talk longer on the phone. However, due to expensive toll charges, the conversation is cut short. It's a practical thing to do here. Fortunately, all that is a thing of the past. Today, with VoIP, we can have voice conversations with anyone we want for as long as we want. This is because calls make using VoIP technology are usually free, as long as whoever is on the other end is also using VoIP. Charges only apply when calls are made from an IP phone to a land line. An IP phone is required at both ends for VoIP to work. The phone is connected to the personal computer or the laptop using a network cable. When voice enters the IP phone, the device converts the data into packets, and transmit the data into the computer system. Special software in the system then transmits the data over the Internet using the IP protocol and the party at the other end receives this data. Data is then converted back to voice again in the IP handset. As you can see, anyone with an Internet connection can make calls using VoIP technology. An small initial investment is required to purchase the necessary hardware and software. Sometimes, the hardware and software may be provided by the VoIP service provider. You will have to check with your local provider to see if the necessary items will be provided if you sign up with them. VoIP has allowed millions of people from all over the world to connect with one another. Calls are usually free, and if there is a fee involved, it's usually just a small fraction of traditional fees for oversea calls. People from all over the world are starting to use this wonderful technology for work and for leisure. VoIP video conferencing is already being tested by VIPs in various countries. It's only a matter before VoIP finds its way into the homes of ordinary consumers. Like it or not, VoIP is here to stay.
