Latest Breaking News - Health - Viewing: Keeping Your Strength Means Keeping Your Youthfulness

2009-09-20

If you want to stay youthful, you have to stay strong. To stay strong we have to physically move our bodies and in particular our muscles. The problem is this works against the fact we are genetically hard-wired to prefer sitting and resting rather than performing physical work.

Our ancient ancestors needed to rest whenever possible to preserve their strength and energy for the daily rigors of securing their food, water and shelter. Today, modern technology has engineered our world to be ultra convenient and 'easy' so that we can indeed go through our entire day without ever having to do any strenuous physical activity.

If you are to be strong, lean and healthy today, you need to do something that might feel uncomfortable and unnatural, especially at first which is to move and exert yourself just for the sake of physical activity. But you will find once you overcome your inertia and do some strengthening activity you will be aware of the immediate benefits to your mental and physical well being. It will make you feel so good you can recognize that this was exactly what your body needed.

Over half of all of our genes are modified by regular proper exercise that includes strengthening activity. This means when you exercise regularly you literally change your genetic makeup and favorably alter almost every aspect of your being, including your level of wellness, your energy, your appearance, body composition (muscle/fat ratio), sleep, blood pressure, healthy hormone balance and longevity.

Proper vigorous exercise triggers chemical signals that remake you into the lean, powerful, energetic, optimistic and happy person you were designed to be with an enthusiastic zest for life.

In the past many of the health problems blamed on simply getting older are actually symptoms of decreasing fitness and diminishing strength caused by simply a lack of enough muscle building and maintaining activity. Fortunately, getting back to a physically active lifestyle will send growth and repair signals throughout your body and brain allowing you to knock years (or decades) of disuse from your body.

It is easy as people get past 30 or 40 years to experience some leisure activities and tasks becoming harder to do so they give them up. By doing less and less, their loss of muscle tissue and bone strength accelerates. Eventually as more things get the chop, even the activities required for daily living become difficult or impossible.

The only way to prevent this gradual erosion is through strength training exercises. So, instead of slowing down and doing less, consider the opposite. Do more, get stronger, get fitter, get more energy, do more and be more. By becoming strong and staying strong with strength training exercise you can break this downward spiral of becoming weaker and enjoy a more active vibrant lifestyle with an improved quality of life.
