Latest Breaking News - Health - Viewing: Just Because You Are 'skinny' Does Not Mean You Are Healthy

2010-08-22

Everyone admires that model look - that slim fabulous look. And she never works out, eats whatever she likes and manages to stay that way. Some of us even strive for her looks by following all sorts of low calorie diets in an attempt to be as gorgeous.

What is hard to believe is that this lovely slim woman may actually have an unhealthy level of body fat and may be laying the foundation for chronic disease later in her life. She has a condition known as being 'skinny fat'.

We should not let ourselves get caught up in appearances as there is a difference to being slim and healthy and thin and unhealthy. This difference lies in our body composition (muscle/fat ratio). This measure of lean and fatty tissue is what makes up our body weight. A healthy body composition has a lower body fat level and higher lean muscle tissue.

So, someone who is skinny can have a large percentage of body fat but the problem is they think they are healthy and do not need to exercise just because they do not necessarily need to lose weight. But without proper exercise, even thin women face a number of serious health issues including osteoporosis, health disease and diabetes.

Lack of proper exercise that works the muscular system leads to high blood sugar levels which lead to fat forming inside the abdomen. This unhealthy fat builds up around major organs hindering their functioning. This fat is even more dangerous as it is hidden and the person can still remain 'thin' or 'skinny' in appearance but underneath there is a health time bomb ticking.

A 'skinny fat' person is often unhappy with their appearance but they often struggle with how they can change it. If they gain the knowledge that they may have high body fat levels they may feel they have to lose fat. But it is not so much losing fat as they need to build and tone muscle tissue. They are not only 'over-fat' but 'under-muscled'.

This condition slows the metabolism (the rate the body burns fuel) and this is how they come to have high levels of accumulated body fat. Their fat burning mechanism needs a tune up one that can only come from strength training exercise. No amount of 'cardio' type activity can ever rebuild and tone up the muscular system and too much of it can even further cause a loss of muscle tissue.

The skinner you get the more at risk you become for osteoporosis. The less strong muscle tissue you have the less work your bones have to do. Without the work they weaken which is not a good thing as they are living tissues directly related to the health of your immune system, your muscle strength and your overall health.

The solution - a proper strength training program performed 2-3 times each week with a bit of effort put into it. Support this program with the energy you need with quality food divided up into 4-6 small meals each day each containing a portion of protein. Ditch as much processed foods as possible - especially sugar and flour and watch your body grown stronger and healthier.

So if you think you are exempt from healthy eating and proper exercising just because you are happy with the numbers on the bathroom scale, think again. Do not risk your long term health just to look 'thin'. Strong, lean and healthy is so much better and you will look better both with clothes on and without them.
