Ever feel like you are fighting a losing battle with your waistline and losing a few pounds? At some level, you really are. Basically, our bodies are built to store fat and to store it efficiently in preparation for times of famine. You see, the human body does not know that there is a fridge full of food in the next room and there is no period of starvation looming. Yet our ancient genes are still programmed exactly the very same way they were thousands of years ago. Sometimes our ancestors had to go days or weeks without food when it was scarce so fat storage was vital for survival. You hear a lot about our metabolism which is basically your body's engine and the rate that you process the food you eat and turn it into fuel or energy. You often hear about its relationship to losing or gaining weight. Many people blame the slowing of this metabolic engine on their weight gain and rightly so. We used to believe it was the passing of the years that caused this metabolic meltdown but know we know differently. The reason our metabolism slows down it is because we slow down. It is the condition of our muscle tissue that determines how much fuel (calories) we burn as muscle tissue is highly active and demands lots of fuel not only when it is moving but just to keep it around. As society teaches us that we should 'slow down' and 'take it easy' as we get older it is no wonder that our muscle tissue goes down the gurgler. Around half a pound of this precious tissue is lost in adults after the mid 20's unless an effort is made to stop this loss. And you can stop this decline by at least 80 per cent with proper exercise so there is no reason to think that our fat burning, youthful, vital metabolic machinery has to slow down like some dwindling old engine. And this proper exercise has to be strength training. Do not expect cardio type exercise such as walking, jogging or cycling to keep your muscle tissue as it will not. These are recreational activities that are great as part of an active lifestyle but can never ever replace a proper exercise program that targets and works major muscle groups with resistance through their full ranges of motion. It is simply incredible how people can expect results from something as low intensity as walking. After all we all have legs and we all walk but this is not slowing the epidemic of obesity and related chronic 'lifestyle disease' which effects one out of every two people in this world. It would be nice if it was that easy, but the human body is build to move and move vigorously and is capable of keeping strong at any age encouraged to do so. This vigorous movement is the mechanism that triggers the chemicals that instruct our body and its cells to rebuild, repair, renew and replace which is vital if we wish to stay healthy and live a long strong life. So, get yourself started on your strength training program and you will lose that pesky body fat which is annoying and also unhealthy, and you will also be amazed and delighted with the multitude of other benefits that will give you a new lease of life.
