We are developing a new approach to exercise in these modern times - one that places less emphasis on body weight or even body fat levels and more focus on obtaining a healthy metabolism (the body's engine) or achieving 'metabolic fitness'. This term really can be defined as how well the human body responds to the hormone insulin which can mean the difference between storing fat and burning fat. If you store fat easily it may mean that you are insulin resistant. The major causes of this condition are lack of proper exercise that works the muscular system and a low quality (refined) diet high in fat, sugars and low in fiber. Our modern diet is one that also promotes becoming overweight along with insulin resistance and an estimated 25 percent of adults are insulin resistance and are not aware of it. Some of the symptoms of insulin resistance are feeling really tired, increased blood pressure from the high levels of insulin circulating in the body, brain fogginess and poor memory, increased abdominal fat and depression. High levels of insulin that hang around in the blood stream ends up in places where it should not be causing damage to tissues and organs hence the increased risk of disease. This unhealthy condition can be improved very quickly by implementing a proper exercise program that works the muscular system so the muscles can soak up some of the excess glucose and burn it for energy in the muscle cells. Toning and rebuilding lost muscle tissue with strength training exercise means that fat burning 'machinery' is added to the body so the metabolic rate is raised every minute of the day and night. This changes the metabolism from one of storing unhealthy fat to burning fat and can delay or even prevent the development of serious health problems. Directly working your muscles with strength training exercise is not to 'burn off' calories while you are at the gym but instead kick start your metabolism into high gear. When you work your muscles intensely you tell your body to get stronger building new tissue so it runs at a higher metabolic rate whether you are exercising or resting. That extra fuel being burnt is the mechanism to improve your metabolic health, utilize hormones better and lose weight at the same time. So it is a lifestyle change you should be looking towards in the way of proper exercise and ditching the refined and processed foods to improve the optimal state of your hormonal function. This will determine whether fat will be burned for energy or stored, aging will be fast or slow, and whether you have sustained good health or disease. It is exciting to know that ongoing research is bringing the science of physical activity and weight loss out of the dark ages and applying a new understanding about the impact of proper exercise and healthy eating has on hormones and metabolism. Then we can choose how we can utilize this knowledge to affect the processing and use of the energy we consume so we can maintain our health and wellness a lot easier.
