It would be safe to say that most people would like to look and feel as young as possible as they get older. Many of us fear aging as we have seen our grandparents and maybe our parents become incapacitated and need to go into a nursing home when they have not been able to take care of themselves and their daily needs.

Today, there is a lot more understanding about the aging process and a lot of what we used to believe was out of our control we now know we have the power to slow it down.
The simple easy way to do this is to live an active lifestyle. Nothing ages the human body quicker than not doing enough muscle building and maintaining activity. Disuse as it is called accelerates the aging process and can lead to premature and preventable disease.

There are so many benefits to doing a proper exercise program made up of mostly strength training and as muscle strength is restored our energy level increases and we feel years younger when fatigue melts away. Having enough energy is important so we can remain active and vibrant no matter our age.

When our muscles are strong they keep the bones strong as well and together they take up their support positions as our body's main structure. The more support they can provide will reduce the strain on other body systems like the cardiovascular, respiratory and skeletal systems. Strong healthy muscles and bones help you to stay upright easier to keep your balance, help you move with agility with good posture for a healthier and more youthful appearance.

Only strength training exercise will give these strengthening benefits. When the muscles are challenged to remain strong they release a very special hormone that is responsible for 'growth and repair' in the human body. A constant supply of this hormone throughout the adult years is what is needed to keep the body strong and healthy. Not doing enough activity to work the muscular system means less of this 'youth' hormone.

Cardio type activity (walking, jogging, cycling, swimming etc) doesn't do much for growth hormone levels and it is people who strength train on a regular basis that have greater strength and bone density. If you use this proper exercise as your primary exercise you will be stronger and leaner than those who only do cardio type activity alone.

The fact is it is the absence of strength training and the decline of growth hormone that causes the body to grow older quicker and pile on excess body fat more easily. Increasing muscle tone fires up the metabolism (the body's engine) so it can burn fat properly. People often blame their overweight problems on a sluggish metabolism when what is really to blame is their lack of muscle tissue as this is where fat is burned for energy.

If you want to stay slim and youthful as you get older your greatest weapon is strength training exercise. Taking steps to slow the aging process is not something you do later in life. The younger you are when you get started the better it will work.

However, it is never too late to start taking care of your health. Keeping your body strong is an investment because it is something that builds up and strengthens as time passes by and will continue working for you right throughout your lifespan.
