Latest Breaking News - Health - Viewing: If You Are Over 40 You Have A High Chance Of Having Heart Disease

2010-11-27

It is a sad fact that in developed countries by age forty almost 50 percent of men and more than 30 percent of women will have heart disease. And sadly many of them will not even know that they have it until it is too late ....when they arrive at an emergency room after a brain or heart disaster.

If you live a no-exercise lifestyle your heart just like the rest of your body can become flabby, unfit and weak and become more susceptible to disease. Yet the opposite is also true and we can keep our heart strong and disease resistant with proper exercise. We have known this for decades but 70 percent of the population choose to ignore this fact and do not do enough strengthening physical activity.

Keeping your muscles strong with strength training exercise is extremely important for cardiac health because the heart is a muscle and is connected to the rest of the muscular system of the body. Any activity that works the muscles and makes them stronger makes the heart stronger as well keeping it fit and toned. The better the condition of your muscles the more they can help the heart stay healthy.

Strong muscles act as auxiliary pumps helping to circulate and push oxygen and nutrient rich blood around the body keeping all cells and tissues healthy. They also help squeeze or 'milk' the blood back to the heart when you are moving and active so the heart has to do less work.

As the heart becomes stronger with proper exercise, the heart rate is lowered requiring fewer beats to pump the same amount of blood. Its strength, endurance and efficiency are also increased. When at rest a strong fit heart pumps 25 percent more blood per minute and during physical exertion it can pump over 50 percent more blood per minute than an unfit heart.

A strong fit heart is less subject to strain when demands on it increase. Even if you do experience a heart attack or stroke, you would be in way better shape to handle it. Having good respiratory fitness that comes with a strong heart means you are able to retain more oxygen in your system which could make all the difference if you ever needed to be resuscitated.

Strength training exercise is critical for heart health as it speeds the metabolism (the body's engine) burns more calories and makes you leaner which lowers heart disease risk. Studies done on cardiac patients strength training just 3 times per week showed they not only gained strength and flexibility but aerobic capacity as part of their rehabilitation program.

Strength training exercise is not only a way to reduce risk of heart disease but also as a therapy for patients in cardiac rehabilitation programs. Do not allow yourself to be one of the shocking statistics of heart disease. Protect your health and longevity with what we know has a multitude of benefits - strength training exercise.
