Writing essays can be easy for most people when there are no time constrains. But the situation changes when you put some time limit on the essay writing. For example, you may find that you write with relative ease when you are writing from the comfort of your own home, with no one bothering you. But during an exam, you find that you often encounter writer's block, and you can't deliver the same level of writing.

So what exactly happened here? Did the topic become more difficult suddenly during an exam?

No, it did not. The topic may still be the same, but you still can't write properly during an exam. That's because you are feeling the pressure.

Now where did this stress and tension come from? There is really no need to stress yourself up if you know how to handle the situation. Here are some suggestions on how to write an essay during an exam.

1. Don't start immediately. Read the topic, but leave the pen on the table. Concentrate on your breathing and relax. Give yourself some time to ease off that tension.

2. Let your mind ponder over the topic for the first 3 to 5 minutes. Don't worry about the time limit. When you worry, fear sets in and you find yourself paralyzed. You then call it mental block, when you are actually experiencing fear.

3. Use the next 3 to 5 minutes to list down your ideas. You can organize them if you like, but that's not mandatory. The important thing is to recognize the good ideas, and work on them.

4. Once you feel settled enough, and you have a list of ideas to work, start working on the essay. Begin anyway you want, but don't hesitate. It's an exam, and you don't have all the time in the world. You don't need a perfect essay. You have to remember - whatever you are experiencing, others are experiencing it too. Everyone is working under similar conditions. So there is no need to strive for perfect essays. You can still score well if you handle the situation well enough.

5. As you write, just let your thoughts flow. Don't keep going back to see if you have written the right thing or not. Just go with the flow. Sometimes, that may lead you away from your initial plan, but that is perfectly alright. As long as you are writing on topic, you are doing fine.

6. Don't get too engrossed with the writing until you forget the time. Always use the last 15 minutes to wrap up the essay. An unfinished essay always get a much lower grade. That's because it's harder to grade an unfinished essay.

Very often, you see students crying after an exam. Why? Because they couldn't finish the essay. They forgot all about the time when they are writing. So don't worry even if you have other ideas that you want to write about. Just give your essay a nice and conclusive ending. You will feel much better, and you will also get better grades.
