Roulette is one of the simplest casino games available. The rules of winning are easy to understand. A white ball is spun around a revolving wheel by a croupier (roulette dealer). You place bets trying to predict in which pocket or slot the ball will land on. The slots are numbered 1 through 36 with alternating red or black color bands. On American style wheels, two additional numbers in green slots, a single 0 and a double 00 represent the house. A European or French roulette wheel has a similar numbering system but uses only the single zero. European roulette was made famous by the Monte Carlo casino and is played in resort hotels, cruise ships and gambling clubs around the world. American style roulette, played mainly in the US and the Caribbean, has a greater house edge but also has a simpler betting layout and faster rules of play. Online roulette has spread this exciting game even further. Along with the software the online casino provides, you can also download and use "roulette companion" applications like Routrack. How to Really Win at Roulette The best way to win at roulette without resorting to a complex betting system is to play the table with the best odds, a European roulette table, or single zero wheels. Although not as popular in America, many high-end casinos and clubs now offer patrons an opportunity to play this elegant, slower paced game. In standard American roulette because of the single and double zeros, the house has an edge of 5.26%. On a European table with the single zero wheel, this edge drops to 2.7%, an almost 50% increase in your favor. Take Those Even Money Bets Red or Black This even money bet pays out 1 for 1 if the ball lands on either the black or red slot. An even money or 1:1 wager is where a $10 bet can win you $10. Basically you get to keep your original bet if you win. Odd or Even Another "even money" bet is when you are wagering whether or not the ball will land on an odd or even number. The green slot with the 0 or 00 is neither even nor odd. High or Low The numbers 1-18 are "Low" and the number 17-36 are "High". The zero(s) are neither. Sometimes low or high bets are called the first eighteen or last eighteen since on American roulette wheels; there are exactly 18 numbers between the 0 and 00 slots. Give up and take Surrender or En Prison Rule! In some American roulette tables you can use the "surrender" rule when you are using even money bets. This means that when the ball lands on either of the house's green slots (0, 00) you only lose half your bet. But the odds are even better when you bet even money on a European wheel and the house wins, you don't lose your bet at all. Your wager is "imprisoned" or En Prison (French for "in prison) and it is carried on to the next game or you can surrender half if you wish. By using the tips above you can easily drop the house edge in roulette from a high of 5.26% to as low as 1.35%. Now just add a sensibly managed bankroll with a little bit of good luck and you could win big at roulette!
