The first step in this weight loss program is to gather up all of your old fad diets, quick weight loss remedies, 'magic cures' ideas and beliefs that are now outdated and obsolete. Once you have them all together in a nice neat pile, throw them into the rubbish and get rid of them forever. One thing we have learned in the last 20 something years is diets don't work 98 percent of the time. They can also actually make things worse by teaching the body how to hold on to its fat stores. This is a perfectly normal thing for our body to do as our ancient survival mechanism kicks in to protect us from starving. If we go on and off 'diets', over time this yo-yo dieting effect can slow your metabolism (the body's engine) changing the way and slowing down the rate our body burns the calories from the food that we eat. This is not the way to lose body fat in fact it is the exact opposite to what you want to happen. So stop fad diets and start eating properly to achieve long term permanent weight loss. The best way to eat to lose fat is to consume 5-7 meals each day every 2-3 hours. Each of these small meals should contain at least 20 grams of protein and be around 300 calories. These small meals do the opposite of dieting and fuel your body so you have enough energy and strength to burn the fat off with proper exercise. You have just learned that you cannot successfully starve it off. Your exercise program is of utmost importance if you wish to lose weight. It should be made up of mostly strength training exercise and be set up by a fitness professional for best results. You need to be sure you are using correct exercise technique and also the correct level of intensity (degree of effort.) Your properly monitored and supervised exercise program is going to get you much quicker results. With regular program updates and your body composition (muscle/fat ratio) monitored along the way your eating plan can be fine tuned for maximum fat loss. Somehow you have to get your head around the fact that if you are really serious about losing body fat you will have to eat right and exercise 80 percent of the time. The other 20 percent allows some slack as it is not possible to be perfect all of the time. This is about balance and finding a solution that will both give you ongoing results and something you can live with long term as well. You will find you get some peace of mind with this way as well. You will no longer feel you are gaining weight in an out of control manner which can cause despair and frustration and does not make for a happy life. You can do 80 percent on track, we all can. You may only start at 50 or 60 percent but over time you can make small improvements which will have a huge impact over say a 12 month period. Soon you will look in the mirror and love what you see.
