Latest Breaking News - Health - Viewing: How Well Does Your Body Function And Feel?

Sunday, November 22, 2009

One of the ill effects of getting older is that the body sometimes hurts. And if it hurts when we move we tend to not want to. We all have heard the words "the old back isn't what it used to be" or 'the knees hurt so park a bit closer so I don't have to walk so far".

But the human body is designed to be healthy; it is not supposed to hurt. When muscles are kept strong with proper exercise they can take up their support positions keeping the skeleton and its moving parts strong and able to do their jobs properly.

Keeping these body parts mobile and continuing to work them through their full ranges of movement with the right activity, means they should not hurt and continue to function well even at the age of 100 plus. But the problem is that as we get older, we tend to stop using our muscles and joints as they are designed to be worked.

People who think that a hurting body is related to the aging process have really got it all wrong. It is not related to aging, it is related to the number of years that the human body has been left to decay and deteriorate through not enough use. Most of us do not have a good working knowledge of what it takes to maintain strength, fitness and good health and simply rely on our doctors to cure us when we become ill.

But in case you haven't noticed, things are changing in regards to our responsibility towards our own health. Unless we do the right things for our body it will fail to function at even the most basic level, becoming out of balance and susceptible to disease.

In fact, many people are beginning to realize that a complete program of health and fitness is . . . well, incomplete without some resistance (strength training) training built into it. Strength training exercise helps increase your body's strength, power and endurance, along with reducing the risk of injury to muscles, joints, ligaments and tendons during everyday activities.

But I hear you say "I am not getting any younger, shouldn't I just stick to low intensity and low resistance exercise to avoid injury?" No, in fact building a little strength can actually reduce the risk of injury. Strong muscles, and joints are much more capable of withstanding stress, and the improved flexibility gained by strength training also reduces the likelihood of pulled muscles and back pain.

Working your muscles can also reduce the debilitating affects of sarcopenia, which is the loss of muscle and bone mass, strength and function through lack of the right activity.

After the age of thirty there is a loss one half pound of muscle tissue per year, making day to day tasks gradually harder to perform and slowing down the metabolism (the body's engine) - increasing the risk of gaining weight and the associated health risks.

We all need to remember that 'movement is life'. Even if you have chronic pain from degenerative arthritis, joint problems or other disease or illness, it is important to continue to perform proper strengthening exercise.

The nice part with a proper strength training program is that you see results very quickly and you will notice a dramatic improvement in your strength, mobility and flexibility. This will make your everyday tasks and activities seem like a breeze to do. Make sure you seek the help of a fitness professional so that your program is safe and effective.

Every single adult on the planet has good reason to exercise, such as continuing to stay strong, losing excess weight, increasing stamina and endurance and to look and feel better. All of these things are important if you wish to get maximum enjoyment from life and living.
