Most people have heard the word metabolism and are aware that it is important to have a fit metabolism if you wish to be of normal body weight along with being in good general health. But what exactly is this mysterious thing called metabolism and how do we know if we are treating it the right way? A healthy metabolism is necessary to maintain the working parts of the body, burn fat effectively, repair and heal damage and get rid of damaging toxins. It could be called your body's engine as it is responsible for the inner machinery for breaking down the food we eat and converting it into resources to keep the body running and fueled. One factor that has huge bearing on metabolic health is the amount of toned muscle tissue we have. But, this is not something that happens on its own as we all lose precious muscle tissue at the rate of one half pound per year after the mid 20's unless we work hard to keep it. As our modern day lives are virtually devoid of anything that even resembles the 'work' or activity our ancestors did it is impossible to keep this muscle tissue without challenging the muscles with regular intentional strength building and maintaining exercise. Boosting metabolism is a proven weight loss method as weight loss will only occur when the body can burn more calories that it consumes. This is affected by two factors: how many calories a person consumes in a day, and how active the metabolism is at breaking down and burning off those calories. For this reason, it is obvious how important it is to boost the metabolism and keep it running at a healthy, efficient level so that you can help your own body to burn off as much stored fuel (calories) as possible. The fastest way to boost your metabolism is with strength training exercise. By toning the muscular system you will get extra fuel burning every minute of the day and night. Keep in mind that strength training is the only exercise that will give this permanent boost to your metabolic motor. Low intensity recreational activities like walking, jogging or cycling are simply not intense enough to stimulate the necessary hormones to do this. Things that slow the metabolism are the things that are common in the Western world: Not enough muscle toning activity Too much sugar and refined food items Eating only one or two large meals each day Too many unhealthy fats Not enough protein Not enough sleep Not enough water and fluids If you wish to be slim and trim having a healthy metabolism is an essential item. You need to be healthy to lose excess body fat not try lose weight to get healthy. Try giving your body what it needs rather than depriving or punishing yourself with harsh diets and the wrong type of exercise. Do the opposite and put the good things in like eating 5-7 small meals each day each containing a source of protein to support your exercise program and to be able to put some effort into it. When it comes to your metabolism, the value of exercise goes way beyond the amount of calories you burn. Strength training not only rebuilds and maintains precious muscle tissue but supports your thyroid, lowers inflammation, and improves the rate at which insulin can move blood sugar into your cells. This means there is more available as fuel for energy and less sugar circulating in the blood to be turned into fat. Think of your metabolism like a bank account and make deposits every day with your proper eating plan and proper exercise program. You will be rewarded with a healthy account balance that accumulates and translates into a life full of energy and lots of 'get up and go' along a lean, strong and healthy body.
