Helen Ga., Bass Fishing Spots

Helen Ga. is an adorable little town and perfect small vacation spot very popular in Georgia. But what few Georgians know is that it has two fantastic locations for bass fishing as well as crappie, bream, and catfish.

If you ever get the chance to visit this enchanted little town, you will quickly see it's popularity for trout fishing. Now don't get me wrong, the trout fishing here is excellent with nice wide well stocked trout streams. The Chattahoochee River runs directly through the small tourist area about five miles, the rivers width makes it good for fly fishing, the forest cover along the river is great for shade, and the average depth of the river make it easy to wade.

I have trout fished here for many years, until I came across two excellent spots for Bass fishing.

One of the best spots is in the Unicoi State Park. There is a bright deep pristine fairly large mountain lake in Unicoi Park called Smith Lake. There have been largemouth bass pulled out of here up to eighteen pounds, and twelve pounds is not a bit uncommon.

I have seen one twenty two pound catfish pulled out of Smith Lake, as well as a few stringers full of large crappie. There are several nice docks surrounding the lake where visitors can fish from, but be aware that the entire park does require a small parking fee.

There is one really nice dock back around the squirrels nest camping area that extends about sixty feet out into deep water, and you can hang a lantern out there and fish all night for crappie, and catfish.

Beyond just excellent bass fishing here, the view will relax any weary soul, and the camping here is excellent.

The second spot, which is not as large or as pristine is the lake at the Sleepy Hollow Campground just minutes from the main commercial district of Helen, Ga. Few people know about this place, I just skipped across it by accident. In fact even if you drive into the campground area, you won't see the campgrounds mountain lake. You have to drive or walk about a mile down a dirt road from the main campground area to get to it.

This lake as far as I know does not have a name, but it's probably about a fifteen-acre very clean mountain lake. This lake is rarely fished; in fact, I have sat out there even during late spring all day, and not seen anyone fishing there.

I camp at Sleepy Hollow Campground mostly because this lake is where I always catch a lot of nice bass usually in the four to eight pound range. The Sleepy Hollow Campground is also a great place to camp.

The campground is owned and managed by a older couple that's always warm welcoming, and friendly. The atmosphere of the entire campground is like being on a large mountain farm with tons of large open areas for spotting a lot of wildlife.

So if you get the chance to visit Helen Ga., and you're an avid bass fisherman, do take advantage of these two perfect bass fishing spots. If you are a fishing enthusiast, Helen Ga. between excellent trout fishing, and these two bass spots you will most likely keep find yourself coming back over and over. I have been personally fishing all over the small alpine mountain village of Helen Ga., for over five years, and can never seem to get enough of it.
