If you have been one of the people caught up in the 'diet trap' or even doing excessive amounts of 'cardio' type exercise for a long time you may have found you have hit a plateau and no longer getting results. This situation can get more serious as once you hit this plateau your body will not respond to the stress you are placing on it anymore. There is damage being caused to your metabolism which will make future weight loss virtually impossible. You also risk speeding up your body's aging process along with damage to your overall health. To reverse what has happened to your metabolism and restore health you will need to go through a transition or healing process. This process means a change in lifestyle habits in the way of healthy eating and proper exercise with the goal of achieving good body composition (muscle/fat ratio) and optimum health. Think of this transition as a journey of healing not another weight loss attempt. It will only happen if you are working to improve your nutrition and exercise methods. During this phase your body's hormones (chemical messengers) will change and become more balanced which is what allows the healing of your metabolic motor. This does not happen overnight - you can not achieve this immediately. The longer you have beaten up your metabolism and the more damaged it is the longer it will take for this process to complete itself. Your body has to rebuild all its structural and functional bio-chemicals which poor habits make inefficient. Your mindset needs to change from "I need to lose weight to get healthy "to "I need to get healthy to lose weight". Restoring your health needs to be your first priority and losing weight then ranked as a distant second. The most important part of this transition is rebuilding and re-toning your muscle tissue. This is the driver of your metabolism and if you have not been doing strength training exercise and too much 'cardio' type activity it is likely that you have lost your most precious fat burning mechanism - your muscle tissue. Just 2-3 sessions each week will be needed if done correctly. Work all your major muscle groups through their ranges of movement with adequate resistance remembering that quality is always better than quantity. You will need to put aside the 'cardio' type activity if you truly want to get well again. You can do some as part of an active lifestyle but not to replace proper exercise and not during the healing phase as you need to protect your muscle tissue not batter it any further with low intensity 'junk' training. Next ditch the processed foods in your diet and start eating 4-6 meals each day spaced 2-3 hours apart. Make sure each of these meals contains at least 20 grams of protein and the balance fresh raw or cooked vegetables. Natural healthy carbohydrates in the form of brown rice, grains and vegetables will support your proper exercise program. This will allow you can put some effort into it so you can make the changes you need to make to get your metabolism burning fat again. The most important factor in this healing process is consistency, both with your exercise program and will your new healthy eating plan. The sooner you get started the sooner you will get through this time and get yourself that strong, lean healthy body you desire.
