We are a sedentary and inactive lot. That is clear. Yet we cannot realistically continue to ignore the fact and remain in denial that our sedentary lifestyles are unhealthy and are in fact lowering the quality and quantity of our lives. We are now paying for the comfort and convenience of our modern day lives with accelerated aging and premature disease.

Fifty percent of adults in the developed world have a chronic lifestyle disease and many have multiple conditions. Many more are tired, lack energy, and are operating far from the peak of good health. Big ticket killer diseases are invading our world - heart disease, cancer, diabetes and dozens of others that cause immense suffering to the victim as well as their families.

Yet rarely are these global health problems talked about, and if they are people just ignore them thinking that it does not really apply to them. The media report constantly on wars, terrorism, the economy and the latest natural disaster. But where does our health fit into all this, where on the totem pole of priorities does it sit? Is it even on the list?

Modern day diseases and illnesses can take years and even decades to show themselves. The smolder away inside till the body is overwhelmed and symptoms begin to appear. These conditions are caused by the way we live our lives, caused by what we do and do not do every single day.

We rely on doctors and drugs when we become ill. But the reality is once the human body has arrived at a broken down state there is no doctor or drug that can restore good health. The 'sickness treatment' system is there to do just that - treat our sickness. Almost all modern chronic disease can only at best be managed leaving the victim with half a life if he/she is lucky.

But treating sickness has absolutely nothing to do with our own health and wellness. There is much we can do to ensure we are protected and each of us must take some responsibility for our own health and well-being. To do that we each must have a self care routine and that routine should include two main things that would help fend off the evil diseases that stalk us.

A proper program of strength training exercise performed 2-3 times each week would keep the entire body strong. All of the systems and processes of the human body need a strong muscular system to support them.

Muscle tissue is where fuel is burnt for energy and proteins are stored for a healthy immune system which protects us from disease. If you allow your body to weaken, its systems weaken as well and you become a sitting duck for one of these 'lifestyle' diseases.

The other thing that you need to do is to get rid of as much processed food as possible. A healthy body that can fend off disease is not built on so called 'foods' that come in pretty boxes with little to zero nutrition. Get it out of your kitchen and your life and replace it with natural 'whole' foods that are cooked from scratch. Whole foods are ones that have not been destroyed by processing, for example a tomato, a carrot, a piece of steak or fish.

These two things implemented and continued throughout your adult years will help ensure your health span matches your life span and you will never end up as another statistic. You will be doing all you can then to get the most from this one turn we get on the merry-go-round of this life.
