Latest Breaking News - Health - Viewing: Have Previous Weight Loss Attempts Messed Up Your Metabolism?

2011-07-02

If your body has been overstressed with restrictive food diets or excessive exercise regimes you need to be aware that you may have damaged your metabolic motor which will not only put the brakes on weight loss it will also speed up the aging process.

You may have gotten some results in the beginning but once you hit a plateau and your body flips its 'survival mode' switch on it will no longer respond to the stress you are placing on it. This makes losing weight nearly impossible and you are risking your overall health as well.

The good news is that metabolic damage can be repaired by concentrating on a healthy eating plan with a proper strength training program performed 2-3 times each week. The right combination of metabolism boosting strength training and nutrition (NOT just a diet), done consistently over a period of time is the ticket. The idea is to restore health with weight loss thrown in as a side benefit.

The big irony for most people is that most of the weight loss programs that claim to help you get rid of excess fat weight only make it harder for you in the long-term. They use harsh metabolism-reducing diets and not enough proper muscle toning exercise (almost never any strength training).

Strength training exercise is absolutely vital to reverse "metabolic damage" because this is the stimulus to tone and maintain the muscle tissue you already have and begin rebuilding new tissue. Muscle tissue is the engine that drives your metabolism (the rate your body burns fuel) and its condition is crucial for weight loss success.

A fat loss eating plan should have enough calories so the 'starvation response' is not triggered. This may mean only a hundred or so calorie reduction each day so there is no 'diet shock'. You could be eating as much 1800 calories each day for women and at least 2200 for men. The idea is to increase calorie burning through strength training rather than trying to starve it off.

This is a much healthier way, kinder on both the body and mind. It is no quick fix as there are none that exist. The sooner you accept that fact the sooner you can get on with the permanent changes you need to make to your metabolism so you can lose fat weight permanently and slow down the aging process.

Small meals made up of 'clean' natural unprocessed foods cooked from scratch are needed for efficient fat loss. A portion of protein is the centerpiece of each small meal and vegetables make up the balance. These meals are eaten every 2-3 hours and the better you do it the better it works.

So forget about the 'less' model that does not work anyway and focus on 'more'. This means more proper muscle toning exercise - and better quality meals. Just those two things alone with give you the very best and fastest fat loss result. Soon you will have a 'souped up' metabolism just like a sleek sports car which is what will maintain your new strong, healthy slim body.
