Latest Breaking News - Travel - Viewing: Great Destinations From Birmingham Airport - Majorca And Cyprus Sunday, February 07, 2010 After extensive research, reflection, discussion and debate, and then more research, we have developed our "how to" guide for Mediterranean islands: if it's a romantic get-away, we insist on Cyprus - nothing less will do. If it's just the girls on holiday, going for fun and frolic, a great deal of seaside sunshine and a little judicious shopping, then we must have Tenerife. And if we're taking the entire family, then we absolutely insist on Majorca and a "farmhouse". First, setting aside theme parks as their own separate category, Majorca ranks among the most kid-friendly places on earth. Even the naughty five-star restaurants make kids feel at home - what better way to teach them their proper forks, spoons, goblets and glasses? As if the giant warm-watered sea weren't enough, Majorca has four water parks, which is twice as many as Southern California, thank you very much, and one of the world's largest and best-equipped water parks gushes and gurgles at the heart of Majorca. Aquacity S'Arenal (Platja de Palma) has a wave pool, a parrot show, and one feature we don't think you'll find at any other water park anywhere - a mini-zoo. Of course, plenty of major five-star resorts dot the exotic coastline. Ho-hum, been there. What Majorca calls a "farmhouse", the rest of us call a "mansion". For less than we would pay to cramp four people into a five-star bedroom, we can live in the lap of luxury: the farmhouses have as many as six bedrooms, and the best have their own gigantic swimming pools. Of course, they have spacious kitchens, lovely furnishings and all kinds of nice amenities; several don't just have golf courses nearby - they are on golf courses. After a week in the farmhouse, the kids really do not want to go home: that is definitely obvious. The ancient Greeks believed that their gods and goddesses spent their holidays on Cyprus, because its rugged coastlines and forest-clad mountains lend themselves to sport, romance, and tragedy. The ancient Greeks absolutely insisted that Aphrodite, celebrated goddess of love and beauty, made Cyprus her home and they flocked to this enchanting island to pay her homage. Your personal pilgrimage to this Mediterranean paradise probably is long overdue. Of course, the coasts lure tourists to Cyprus from all around the globe. Cyprus's east coast is best known for its smooth, soft beaches and laid-back resorts. Like any respectable beach resort, however, the nightlife in Larnaca and Ayia Napa absolutely rocks. Think of the East coast as the island's quieter side. Although still chilled-out well beyond "relaxed," the island's west coast is its more cosmopolitan side - the side with the upscale shopping and the discos. No matter which side a traveler chooses, he or she will reluctantly will, returning home well "embrowned" as Jane Austen would have said, and a little too perfectly relaxed. When planning a holiday in Cyprus, wise travelers should take it as given they should schedule their flights via Birmingham International Airport, the kingdom's smaller, faster, most affordable airport. BIA is considerably more accessible than other British airports, and fares from Birmingham are typically 10% lower than those from more congested terminals.
