Latest Breaking News - Health - Viewing: Get A Smile That Sparkles With Dental Veneers From Your Cleveland Dentist

2011-07-03

Is your smile less than what you want? Are you in search of a stunning smile that will impress others, including yourself? When applied over the surface of a tooth, dental veneers can cover worn tooth enamel, uneven tooth alignment or spacing, and chips or cracks. Dental veneers fall into the category of cosmetic dentistry because they create a bright, white smile with beautifully aligned, shapely teeth.

The translucent quality of today's ceramic veneers provides a more natural look than what has been available previously. Dental veneers are a very popular treatment in cosmetic dentistry and are used for either aesthetic purposes or when front teeth are damaged, chipped or broken. Veneers are essentially custom fabricated shells of ceramic material, which are bonded over the front surface of a tooth to cover up an array of dental problems.

When are Dental Veneers Used?

According to the Academy of General Dentistry, if you are looking to mask mild to moderate tooth discolorations or, correct minor alignments and rotation of anterior teeth, veneers may be the right choice for your smile restoration. Veneers may help significantly change most, if not all of your cosmetic dental issues.

Dental veneers can typically be applied for the following dental problems:
• Worn down and damaged teeth.
• Natural wear and tear.
• Crooked teeth
• Accidental damage

With age and over time, the thin, tough outer surface that coats your teeth (enamel), can wear and look dulled, stained and discolored. This can occur naturally with age, or as a result of certain medications. However, it is more often due to habits such as tooth grinding, poor oral hygiene and the consumption of carbonated, sugary soft drinks. Smoking and drinking tea can also contribute to the discoloration of your teeth.

Your teeth can either be naturally crooked or can become crooked over time due to age or through loosing neighboring teeth and gum disease. Crooked teeth can be treated using braces, or clear aligners, but results can take years before they are fully seen. In some cases, veneers are referred to as instant orthodontics because they will cover up the imperfections of slightly crooked teeth, allowing you to have an instant smile that you have always desired.

The Dental Veneers Procedure

Typically, veneers require at least three dental visits to complete, which involves - diagnosis and treatment planning, preparation, and bonding. To prepare your teeth for veneers, your dentist will lightly buff your teeth to allow for the small added thickness of the veneer. Typically, about half a millimeter of your tooth will be removed.

An impression of your teeth is taken and sent to a dental lab where your veneers are custom fabricated. At your next dental visit, your dentist will attach the veneers to your teeth with a special adhesive to keep them in place permanently. During a two-week period of adjustment that follows your procedure, you may notice a slight change in the size and shape of your teeth.

Veneers are not for everyone, requiring proper consultation with your dentist. Upon review and diagnosis, your Parma dentist will assess and develop a proper treatment plan for enhancing the appearance of your smile.
