Latest Breaking News - Home Improvement - Viewing: Gardening as a Hobby

After a long week of working in a dreary and stressful job, there is nothing that relaxes me more than spending some time working in the garden. Even if you might argue as to the amount of relaxation that it might give, owing to the work involved, I would still say that it is certainly rewarding. Besides that, it gives you that feeling of satisfaction and overall well-being.

It keeps you physically fit and in case, you are not that fit, you will soon be, as you work through the garden. As far as, pursuing gardening as a hobby is concerned, I do not think that it is so much possible.

When I moved my house, I went from owning a concrete backyard with a swimming pool, quite low maintenance, to owning an old farmhouse that had about an acre of weeds and overgrown shrubs.

The initial years passed by without us doing anything more than mowing the weeds while our main focus was the inside of our house. As the interiors became more well designed and finished, we were left with nothing to do other than focus on our surrounding grounds. But, the question was, where do we begin?

Nevertheless, by the end of that summer, we had managed to create an almost beautiful courtyard. It was right outside our kitchen. The place was small and private, complete with a beautiful waterfall as well as a herb garden. It even had a seating area that was comfortably shaded by a half-century-old oak.

Additionally, we fenced the area and planted some flowering shrubs and hedges. We even seeded a new lawn in the back and planted a galore of flowers. Thus, we not only had the herb garden, we even had a garden at the entry, a garden in the shade, a garden in the sun and even a vegetable garden.

While we were doing all this heavy work, never did we realise how strenuous this whole thing was. However, we did come to that realisation. This stuff needed real work. We had to dig, add nutrients due to the clay soil, we had to do the planting and it did not end there. We had to then maintain all the plants. Thus, we had to water them, weed the place, deadhead the flowers.

If you are thinking it is simple enough, well, think again. Weeding alone can take you about three days in a week. And then you have to do all the other stuff too. above all, you do not have the garden alone that needs tending, you still have your house to look after.

Even if you opt for herbicides, you have to be extra careful with all of them particularly when you have vegetables as well as ground water around.

As far as my experience says, I can hardly include gardening as a hobby. While it is enjoyable, it is also time as well as energy consuming.
