Until this day, it is quite difficult to comprehend why some people would resort to taking their own lives to get away from their problems. Is it just a psychological problem or has something gone wrong in their system that makes them suicidal? Psychological theories of Traditional Chinese Medicine have it that suicidal tendencies are linked to mental disorders. Chinese medical experts have claimed that mental ailments can be cured by treating the body through a holistic approach, which means treating both the mind and body. The most common traditional Chinese medicine that has a holistic approach is acupuncture, which has also been considered to prevent suicides. Acupuncture uses fine needles to stimulate the acupuncture points located along the meridians where the body's vital energy flows. Most people with suicidal tendencies are usually depressed, and through acupuncture, the needles stimulate the central nervous system to produce endorphins and serotonin. While serotonin is known as the "happy chemical" in the brain, endorphins are compounds that trigger happiness. This portion of the acupuncture treatment alone can take the patient out of depression. At the Institute of Psychology of Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine, Du Wendong said there were no reported suicide cases in the university since 1985 when the institution used acupuncture to deal with students' mental woes. One of Du Wendong's students named Chen Qing had a chronic diarrhea and was temperamental that she often bickers with her classmates. After checking up on Chen, Du found out that the student was stressed out by her studies and her diarrhea was caused by psychological disorders. Moreover, her short temper was caused by liver hyperactivity that results to dizziness, red eyes, and headache. Du applied acupuncture to Chen and her depression was healed, and so were the other conditions that she suffered with it. Du Wendong said mental intervention through acupuncture helped curb nearly 200 suicide cases in the university. Zhang Ning, a physician who specializes in treating psychological ailments, said acupuncture and other traditional Chinese treatments are more effective than anti-depression drugs that contain chemicals that could be harmful to the body's other vital organs. As against anti-depression drugs, one patient said acupuncture was different, the treatment process gave total relief and the depression has never recurred, unlike conventional drugs that caused insomnia and even hallucinations. Not only does acupuncture have few or zero side-effects, it also improves the patient's sleeping patterns. In China, psychological problems among the youth have become a growing concern as they have proven that suicide and mental problems are intertwined. Findings from a research conducted by the Beijing Suicide Research and Prevention Centre revealed that 63 percent of over 200,000 people that took their own lives were suffering from mental problems. Give acupuncture a try.
