Accidents are a part of life. Some people just seem to be more accident prone than others, but that doesn't mean that a slip or fall won't happen to you, too. That is why it is so important to always take the right precautions when using any type of maintenance device, including a step stool. So, how can you protect yourself when using a step stool? Begin by following these basic safety tips: 1. Use a spotter. Never climb onto a step stool or step ladder without another person there to stabilize the stool and/or catch you if you fall, especially if you are climbing higher than a step or two or have balance problems. 2. Use a step stool with a handrail. Handrails can come in handy for those who use step stools for medical reasons; who find it difficult to balance themselves; or who may be carrying things while using a step stool. 3. Lock the step stool in place. Depending on the style and size of your step stool, there may be several parts that need to be locked in place to ensure that it will not move or slip wile in use. Any type of folding stool will definitely need to have the legs checked to make sure they are locked properly, but some also have individual steps and rails that should be locked as well. 4. Keep your stool in good working order. Step stools are hardy devices, but that doesn't mean that they don't need some basic maintenance care from time to time. Be sure to replace worn rubber feet or you may find your stool moving when you don't want it to. Also, check its hinges for rusting or other damage. Anytime a step stool appears worn, creaky, wobbly or otherwise broken, be sure to either have it fixed or replace it entirely. Replacing or repairing a step stool may seem costly up front, but your safety is worth it in the end. 5. Store your step stool carefully. All tools (including a step stool) need to be stored properly in order to keep them in good working order. Make sure you store your step stools in a dry cool place to keep it form getting damaged in any way. Step stools are made to make things in life easier and more efficient. While accidents do happen from time to time, you can drastically reduce your chance of injury while using a step stool by being careful and following the tips listed above.
