Latest Breaking News - Health - Viewing: Firm Toned Muscles Assist In Keeping You Healthy Sunday, February 07, 2010 Our system of muscles is our largest metabolic organ weighing up to 50 percent of our body weight. Many of our modern day health issues such as being overweight and the incidence of 'chronic lifestyle' disease such as heart disease, cancer and diabetes are related to our muscle tissue condition. Many of these conditions stem from metabolic disturbances caused by frantic schedules that lead to poor quality food often eaten on the run and not enough proper exercise working our important muscular system. The prolonged stress of our constant busyness, poorly maintained muscle tissue combined with excess body fat negatively affects the body's energy producing mechanisms. This can lead to hormonal imbalances that not only predispose a person to nasty diseases but leave them feeling chronically below par, unable to achieve the full potential and simply limping through life. To restore health and improve the condition of the muscles which are crucial to a healthy metabolism strength training exercise is the only exercise that is effective for rebuilding them. Muscle tissue is where fuel (calories) are burnt for energy so toning them up with regular proper training produces a long-term increase in basic metabolic rate (the rate the body burns fuel) and has a positive influence on our metabolic condition When you provide your body with the physical 'work' to keep it strong, 'growth and repair' hormones are stimulated that instruct the cells to repair, rebuild and renew. If you fail to do this the muscular system loses tissue at the rate of one half pound per year throughout an adult's life. After age 50 this rate doubles dragging strength, vitality, physical function and health with it. If we take care of ourselves throughout our adult life with the addition of strength training to keep our muscles strong and functional they do not have to shrink and strength does not have to fade away. Your exercise program will enable you to burn more calories not only during your exercise sessions but every minute day and night. Because our muscle tissue requires more calories than fat to maintain itself, those who strength train regularly burn more calories even when resting. Strength training can increase your metabolism (your body's engine) by up to 15% creating changes in the metabolism that assist in shedding excess body fat and offsetting the negative lifestyle factors caused by our modern busy lives. Even if time is short strength training is so effective just 2-3 sessions each week will be effective especially if some effort is put into them. So, if you are looking for more inspiration to go to the gym remember that strength building workouts can not only extend your life by protecting you from disease they will give your life more quality. More strength means more energy so you can pack lots of exciting things into your life and get the most enjoyment out of it.
