The upper classes look for a different kind of import. They are the moneyed classes who have a global level of awareness. Hence they want items that are used all over the world and in well-developed nations. These demands thus include high-end electronic items, home appliances, apparel and food items.

Other than these consumer oriented imports, India also imports a lot food for mass consumption when its own production falls short. India also imports a large quantity of crude oil every year. India is a large exporter of aluminum and aluminum ore. Since aluminum takes a lot of electricity to extract, India mainly exports the ore to other countries where power is cheaper. Power is not abundant in India and there is a definite deficit in that area.
