Whether you are moving into your first apartment or your dream home, decorating your living space is an exciting adventure. Adding a picture here, a light there and a new coat of paint in the bedroom can all help to set a mood and show the world what you and your family are all about. The problem is, decorating your home isn't always easy. Sometimes it takes a lot of hard work and knowledge you may not have. There is an answer: begin with simple projects that need little know-how and few tools. Once you've mastered them, you can try your hand at a more complicated one. So what types of tools should an amateur decorator invest in? Most experts agree that every homeowner should have the following: - A hammer and screwdriver. Whether it's removing nails and screws in the wall from the previous resident or adding your own, with these two basic tools, just about any small task can be accomplished. - A level. You'll need this to keep things straight around the house. There's nothing worse than a shelf that's crooked and can't hold things. - A paintbrush and rollers. These are essential for sprucing up the paint up your home, which is one of the easiest ways to change a room and make it your own. Invest in reusable brushes and rollers, and you will be able to paint the room any time you get a whim. - A good step stool. If there is one thing every homeowner needs it is a good step stool. Not only will it allow you to reach high shelves and storage areas, but it can be used to change draperies, reach higher corners and ceilings while painting; fix light bulbs and even dust high shelves and ceiling fans. While a three step stool or small stepladder is very useful, I also recommend investing in an inexpensive single step stool that is easy to store and fast to use all over the house. Once you have gathered these basic decorating tools, then you will be ready to tackle some of these simple projects: - painting - hanging pictures - adding sconces to your room - installing a ceiling fan - hanging track lighting - hanging mirrors - hanging curtains and blinds - and more ... much, much more! Who would have thought that you could accomplish so much with so little? Well, you can, and without breaking the bank, so get to work turning your house into a home.
