Emotional intelligence or EQ for short according to the expert on the subject Daniel Goleman is essentially;

'The capacity for recognising our own feelings and those of others, for motivating ourselves and for managing emotions well in ourselves and others'

EQ includes competency traits such as optimism, effective productivity, self esteem, motivation, empathy and personal interaction and social skills. It affects almost everything you do. Women and men actually have equal EQ but tend to be strong in different areas. Women will score more highly in empathy, social responsibility, for example, whilst men tend to display higher levels of self confidence. An emotion is your response to any feeling of pain, pleasure, attraction or repulsion and they are unique to everyone primarily because they are learned responses to past events and situations.

Our EQ comes from the right side of our brain which houses our creative potential whereas our IQ, the more rational logical reasoning and thinking originates from the left side of the brain. Psychologists and neuroscientists now conclude that EQ is a far better predictor of your success and happiness in life than your IQ because you need an emotional commitment to achieving your true potential. This certainly explains why, often, the less talented types in IQ terms go on to achieve far more in their careers. They are passionate, displaying an 'intensity' of emotion regarding their desires. As it's now understood more fully that our actions follow our thoughts and our thoughts come from how we feel then we attract what we most intensely focus upon. Of course, action is very important too in enabling us to achieve our goals.

Our EQ is also the gateway to our higher intelligence, sometimes referred to as spiritual intelligence or whole-brain thinking because it connects us to the universal infinite intelligence. It is our genius brain which creates vibratory brain states like the eureka moment of having a spontaneous insight to a problem or coming up with a unique idea.
This type of intelligence is often absent in todays stressful world of work which is no good for it. It requires detachment and balance to trigger the lower vibration brainwave state. The good news for all of us is that EQ can be developed to assist our personal growth and development.

Clearly there are a number of benefits of working with emotional intelligence whatever your personal objectives in life. Leaders with great EQ are far more effective and successful at rising to the top of organisations because they are far more easily and powerfully able to connect and engage both their staff and their customers. They are the better relationship builders. The better your self awareness the better able you are to control your actions and increase your stress tolerance. Understanding other people's emotions will give you a deeper insight into how to motivate them. Let's take the scenario of someone who is driven by fear of failure and someone who is driven towards success. The individual driven by success may need less encouragement in getting started and overall support but may need to be guided with regard to their people style, possibly, in their exuberance to get to where they want to go and the individual motivated by a fear of failure will need more encouragement, positive recognition and support in achieving goals, overcoming fears and self-limiting beliefs.

Leaders who have this quality are considered to be more inspirational because of the depth of connection and with inspiration comes influence. Emotional intelligence has the ability to bring out the best in others, crucial to any leader who wants to improve productivity and profitability results.

From a wider societal perspective where there is a multitude of problems ranging from obsessive -compulsive disorder, panic attacks, addiction and emotional difficulties and increasing levels of depression. EQ can inoculate these symptoms that way life becomes more enjoyable and rewarding and we achieve more and progress at work, have better relationships, have more control over ourselves leaving us in a better position to help others and to transform our own lives.
