Latest Breaking News - Health - Viewing: Ease Pain With Acupuncture

2010-10-26

Pain can be so stressful and depressing, although pain relievers are readily available in pharmacies, taking them entails a lot of side-effects that could be harmful to the body.

Instead of taking the seemingly easy way out of downing a pill to ease the pain, traditional Chinese medicine offers a more safe and effective alternative to easing pain.

The traditional Chinese therapy known as acupuncture, which has been proven to cure a wide range of ailments, has also been known to relieve pain.

Physician Jessica Colyer, who is a member of the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation team at the University of Cincinnati Health, applies acupuncture to relieve her patients from pain despite the fact that their facility is fully equipped with the latest innovations in medical technology.

Colyer completed her medical residency at the University of Kentucky Medical Center and was already a licensed acupuncturist before she joined UC Health.

In the United States, only licensed acupuncture practitioners are allowed to perform the treatment, thus Colyer invested time to undergo intensive training in acupuncture on top of her regular medical training.

However, Colyer's orientation in acupuncture is solely for pain management, which is what was needed in rehabilitation centers.

Colyer said the thought of being able to apply alternative treatments such as acupuncture, got her interested to be part of the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation team. She said it was another way of helping injured people regain their health and be given the chance to again interact with the community.

Acupuncture is an ancient form of Chinese healing art that has been in existence for thousands of years. It utilizes specialized thin needles that stimulate the body's acupuncture points to rejuvenate the vital energy flow of the body, also known as Qi.

Based on a survey conducted by the National Institutes of Health's National center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, around 150,000 children and 3.1 million adults in the United States have resorted to acupuncture in 2007, which was over a million more people since the 2002 survey.

Although studies on how acupuncture can relieve pain did not come up with conclusive results, Western medicine believes that when the acupuncture points are stimulated by the specified needles, the central nervous system releases chemicals that can relieve pain.

Despite the inconclusive studies, more and more people are now more keen in trying acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine to relieve them of their pain because not only does it ease the pain, it also treats their mind and body holistically.

More than that, alternative Chinese medicine such as acupuncture also does not have harmful side effects like those when conventional chemical treatments are being applied. Chemical drugs used as pain reliever would often result to headaches, stomach problems, and dizziness, among others.
