Majorca in Spain is a place that is steeped in history and rich in tradition and heritage. When you go to Majorca (also known as Mallorca locally) you can have your fill of some of the most delightful sights in Spain. It is a great city to just roam about and take things at your own pace. You can simply hire a car and go around the entire city looking at the old places, the monuments and the culture that the city has to offer. Here are some of the places well worth a visit.

You can start with the gothic cathedral which is one of the most well known sights of the city. It has beautiful stained glass windows and sits in front of one of the oldest areas in the city. You can then go and visit the area behind it that contains buildings in gothic, baroque, medieval and even renaissance style. The City Hall is in fact a renaissance style building.

Next up visit the Castell de Bellver (the castle of Bellver). It is a 14th century fortress that has been beautifully preserved for everyone to see and marvel at. It is located on the western side of the city.

You can also take the guided tours that are arranged by the tourism department of the Balearic Government (the Conselleria de Turisme of Govern de les Illes Balears). You can choose from amongst four different tours that will take you through the old city of Palma. It is a fantastic way to experience the cultural past of the city almost first hand. You will feel as if you have gone back in time – it is the most wonderful feeling.

The city council also offers a tour of the Patios of the city. These patios belong to the grand buildings of the city and performed a central role in city life of the past.

Every year car rental companies deal with huge demand for car hire in Majorca. It is one of the most popular spots in Spain when it comes to hiring a car. It is vital that you begin searching early for transport as it can run out fast during peak holiday periods. One thing for certain is the continuing popularity of Majorca as a holiday destination.

If you are visiting Spain, it will be a shame if you cannot take part in true Spanish style celebrations. Majorca, like most other cities in Spain shares common festivals like the holy week and the Christmas festival. It also has festivals that are unique to Majorca.

Every year on the 19th of January, Majorca celebrates Revetlla de Sant Sebastia – the patron saint of the city by lighting bonfires and roasting meat on an open fire. There is dancing and singing in the square with different bands playing throughout the night.
