Latest Breaking News - Sports and Fitness - Viewing: Dirt Jump Bikes For The Young

2010-08-03

Kids are sometimes not content with sitting quietly on a bicycle and cruising along at a constant speed. They want to try new things - like doing stunts on their bicycles, riding over dirt bumps, etc. So a special category of bikes emerged for these special kids - dirt jump bikes.

Dirt jump bikes do exactly as the name suggests. They are robustly built for performing stunts on dirt. The frame are small in size and weighs very little. That allows the bike to fly freely in the air during jumps.

To choose a good dirt jump, take note of the following.

1) Total weight of the bikes.
2) Gears and chain system for quick acceleration.
3) Braking system for more consistent braking.
4) Robust rims and wheels on the bike.

1) Total weight of the bikes.

You have to remember, dirt jump bikes are meant to spend a lot of time in the air. For it to do so successfully, it has be very light. Otherwise, it will be dropping like a brick every time your kid tries to get it fly!

Good dirt jump bikes can be a little costly for this reason. The parts are engineered to perfection, making sure that they don't add any extra weight to the bike while still functioning properly.

2) Gears and chain system for quick acceleration.

Dirt jump bikes do not have to cruise at high speeds for long periods of time. But it needs to be able to get to a speed that is fast enough to launch rider and bike into the air during the jump. Hence, the gear and chain system has to support fast acceleration. The faster the bike accelerates, the better it is for the rider.

3) Braking system for more consistent braking.

Almost all modern dirt jump bikes use brake discs on both the front and rear brakes. Ordinary bikes use V brakes. V brakes are more affordable, and requires very little maintenance. Brake discs also requires very little maintenance. But they provide a more consistent braking experience - in both wet and dry conditions. In this aspect, it is far superior to V brakes. Since dirt bikes may end up in wet conditions (rain during races), it's important for the bike to have a reliable braking system.

4) Robust rims and wheels on the bike.

You will never see slick and unstable tires on a dirt jump bike. Such tires just doesn't fit the everyday function of a dirt jump bike. As the bike launches into the air, it needs to come back down and land. When it lands, a lot of impact is placed on the wheels. To absorb this impact, lower pressure tires tend to do a much better job.

A good dirt jump bike is built for rugged use. So it must be able to survive stunts like vertical drops. Consider spending a little more for a higher quality dirt jump bike.
