Latest Breaking News - Health - Viewing: Diets Do The Opposite To What You Want Them To

2009-06-12

One of the biggest threats that people face in the world today is the inability to maintain a healthy body weight. It all boils down to the health of your body's chemical make up... your fat-burning furnace... your body's engine...your metabolism.

Many people believe that our metabolism is determined by factors beyond our control; we think that some people are just born thin, while others have to struggle to get and keep their body weight under control. But once you understand how your metabolism actually works, you will realize... It does not have to be this way...

Many people, in an effort to lose weight quickly, tend to cut calories way too drastically which is one of the major reasons why many people dieting suffer from a slow metabolism. When you drastically cut calories below your maintenance level, your body tries to conserve and hold on to every last bit of energy for survival.

The lowering of calories too far can lower the metabolic rate as much as 45 percent which means the body burns less fuel so; a slow metabolic rate is not a good thing for either short or long term fat loss. Other factors that can work against the efficiency of the metabolism are yo yo dieting, skipping meals, poor food quality, processed foods, lack of complete protein, lack of essential fats, excess carbohydrates and not enough proper exercise that strengthens the muscles through their ranges of movement.

But all of these things are under our control. If we feel our metabolism has slowed and we pile the weight on easily so every bit of food we eat causes us worry it is time to make some changes. Introduce some positive changes while reducing the bad habits that cause us to send our metabolic health into decline. The end result of an unhealthy metabolism is becoming overweight and exposing ourselves to the risk of serious health issues somewhere down the track.

Since the condition of our muscle tissue directly relates to the efficiency of our metabolism it is critical that we do enough strength building and maintaining exercise. Just 2-3 exercise sessions each week done correctly and with a bit of effort will speed up the metabolic rate long after the exercise session has finished correcting any imbalance in body composition (muscle/fat ratio).

If you have been relatively inactive for a while, first lost muscle tissue has to be recovered. You will also need to learn to adhere to a baseline eating plan that has you eating small meals every 2-3 hours with each meal containing at least 20 grams of protein.

Increasing the speed of our metabolism is probably one of the easiest ways to lose weight naturally and these two factors - strength training exercise and small balanced meals will have you well on the way to achieve this in a matter of months. Of course this is a long term solution for fat loss (there is no short term solution).

Your muscle tissue is your very best friend and is the engine room of your metabolism playing a major role in your nutrition and exercise regime. The more understanding you acquire of the relationship between metabolism and good health the easier it will be for you to stay youthful, strong, lean, vital, energetic and slim.
