If you have lost all of your teeth, or even a few, whether it is from periodontal disease, tooth decay or injury, dentures can replace your missing teeth and restore your smile. Tooth loss can often make you feel overwhelmed or confused about the options available to restore your smile as closely as possible to your natural teeth, but don't panic. With advancements in dentistry, dentures are no longer for the elderly. New dentures are designed to be more comfortable and functional than ever before. Similar in appearance to natural teeth, dentures can significantly improve your smile and facial appearance. Implants Stabilize Your Dentures Having a loose or ill-fitting denture can create a whole set of new problems. These can include cosmetic issues and problems with chewing food or simply speaking. If you are missing several or all of your teeth, dental implants can be used to stabilize or support a denture. No longer will you need to worry about your dentures slipping or messy adhesives. An implant-supported denture is a type of overdenture that is supported by and attached to dental implants while a regular denture rests on the gums and is not supported by implants. When a person does not have any teeth in their jaw, but has enough bone in the jaw to support implants, an implant supported denture can be used. Typically, implant supported dentures are created for the lower jaw because regular dentures tend to be less stable when used on the lower jaw. Usually, a regular denture made to fit an upper jaw is quite stable on its own and doesn't need the extra support offered by implants. However, you can receive an implant-supported denture in both the upper and lower jaw. Caring for Your Implant Supported Dentures While wearing dentures, it is extremely important to practice healthy dental hygiene. With improper hygiene you run a greater risk of developing more serious medical conditions should an oral irritation result from. These conditions often include periodontal disease, fungal infections, and leukoplakia which is thickened white, potentially precancerous patches on the mucous membranes, also called smoker's tongue. It is important to remove your implant-supported denture daily to clean the denture and your gums. Your gums, tongue and palate should be brushed with a soft bristle brush every evening when the dentures are removed and each day before you insert your dentures to stimulate the gums and remove plaque accumulation. When removing your dentures before bed, be sure to brush them carefully in order to remove any loose debris and plaque, as well as soaking them in a cleansing solution.
