Latest Breaking News - Health - Viewing: Could Your Strength Be Ebbing Away On An Outgoing Tide? Sunday, February 07, 2010 Every movement we make, from simply standing to driving the car to sleeping involves our muscles. Our muscular system is one of the most important systems in the human body and yet it gets taken for granted much of the time. The condition of our muscles and their level of strength rarely get a second thought until something goes wrong - then they get plenty of attention. Yet our strength declines from the mid 20's on at a rate of one half pound per year then after age 50 this rate doubles. This loss drags health down with it as muscle tissue is the engine of the body responsible for the metabolic rate (the rate the body burns fuel). It isn't just the metabolism that muscle loss slows; it weakens every other system and process in the human body. It is only when we use our muscles and challenge them to remain strong do we stimulate 'growth and repair' hormones that keep our entire body strong and disease resilient. As we no longer have built in muscular 'work' in our convenient and 'easy' lives we have to add proper exercise to keep our muscles strong if we wish to remain healthy. Strength training exercise is the only activity that will give our muscles the work that they need. Many people think they are working their muscles when they perform 'cardio' type activity such as walking, jogging or cycling or other recreational types of activity. But there activities only work some of the muscles in very limited ranges of movement and are so low intensity they cannot maintain muscle tissue and can certainly not recover and rebuild lost muscle mass. If all you are doing is this type of activity it is falling way short of a proper exercise program and can actually end up costing you more lost muscle tissue. This is a very unhealthy situation. Your exercise program must preserve muscle tissue at all costs to protect you from disease and body weakness and becomes even more important as each year passes. Regular strength training exercise increases the size and strength of the muscle fibers. It also strengthens the bones, joints, tendons and ligaments. It strengthens the heart and all of its pipes, increases the metabolism (the bodies engine) which will help stop you accumulating excess body fat that goes hand in hand with a sedentary lifestyle. The hormones stimulated when working your muscles properly will rejuvenate your entire body. All cells and tissues get a dose of youth like hormones knocking years (even decades) off how you look and how you feel. The changes that you will receive will have a positive impact on your physical strength and fitness and your appearance. And yes, it will take a bit of effort and you will have to discipline yourself 2-3 times each week to do your exercise program. But when you weigh up the alternative of not keeping your strength the costs far outweigh the inconvenience. Don't wait till you get to mid life and find your strength has ebbed away on the outgoing tide. Make it a priority and you will never ever regret the time and effort spent as the quality of your life will be increased enhancing health and well being every single day.
