TMJ disorder (TMD) is caused from misalignment of the TMJ (temporomandibular joint) that is just below your ear. The TMJ is the joint connecting the lower jaw to the skull, and this joint works in conjunction with a series of muscles, bones and ligaments which allow you to move your mouth to chew, speak, yawn and swallow. TMD occurs when all or part of these muscles and ligaments don't work in harmony with each other, or in other words, when the joint is not functioning normally. TMD is frequently misdiagnosed and not fully understood by professionals. Sufferers of TMD complain of a variety of symptoms such as pain in their back, neck, and jaw, as well as headaches, dizziness and overall tension. One very common complaint is pain or fullness in the ear, and in many cases the patient actually goes to their doctor complaining of an ear infection rather than jaw pain. Causes and Symptoms of TMJ The pain associated with TMD is often caused by damage or misalignment of the cartilage that cushions the temporomandibular joint. When working properly, the joint's cartilage allows the TMJ to move smoothly. When there is damage, however, pain is the result. Common causes of TMJ pain include: * Trauma to the jaw * Teeth grinding or clenching * Excessive gum chewing * Stress * Improper bite or misaligned jaws * Arthritis There are many symptoms associated with TMD. Every person is different, and therefore, the disorder can manifest itself in a variety of ways. Common symptoms of TMD include: * Pain and tenderness in the jaw * Temple/cheek/face pain * Jaw popping/clicking * Locking of the jaw * Frequent headaches or neck pain TMJ pain may be sharp, especially with yawning, speaking or chewing. It may also present itself as a dull and constant pain. Victims of TMJ may complain of pain over joint and below the ear, or the pain may radiate elsewhere such as the lower jaw, cheek and teeth. In many cases, patients complain of ear pain and are convinced that their initial pain is actually an ear infection. When the earache is not associated with hearing loss and the eardrum looks normal, the physician may consider TMD as a possible diagnosis. Visit Your London Dentist When TMJ pain persists, visit your dentist for a proper assessment. Many times TMJ pain is the result of malocclusion, or a "bad bite." Your dentist can discuss possible causes and treatment options to put an end to your pain. Misaligned teeth force surrounding muscles into a strained position that result in pain. Your London dentist can work with you to determine the treatment for normal jaw positioning to realign the bite and restore the teeth, thus repositioning the jaw and joints to their optimal position. Once the bite is realigned and the jaw is in place, pain should also disappear.
