A beautiful and healthy lawn can complete the look of the outside of your home as well as contribute to the environment. Your grass is very resourceful when it comes to transforming Carbon Dioxide to Oxygen, therefore helping clean the air.  By following a regular lawn care regimen, you can achieve the look of a beautiful lawn while contributing to clean air.

You don't have to be a professional in order to have a healthy lawn, but just try to cooperate with nature. This entails creating an environment for your grass to bloom and repel damage caused from weeds and insects. This can be accomplished by setting objectives for your lawn, regardless if you or a professional landscape service will be completing the job.

What can you do to maintain a healthy lawn?

Even small changes and weekly attention can make a difference in your lawn health. For instance, start with healthy soil. Most lawns need to be fertilized yearly, as fertilization adds nutrients that soils need in order to stay healthy.  It is best to use a fertilizer that releases slowly into your lawn in order to ensure that you are not over-fertilizing, as over fertilization can actually harm your lawn.

Mow your lawn often, with sharp blades, keeping your leaf surface high, or slightly longer than normal. This will allow grass to grow thicker and develop a strong root system as well as help preserve moisture which will make it hard for weeds to develop and grow.

Water slowly, deeply and only when necessary. It is recommended to water your lawn early in the morning in order to decrease evaporation and try to imitate a slow, soaking rain. You want to water your lawn enough for the water to soak about 6 inches into the soil.  Too little water will not soak deep enough into the soil, resulting in roots staying near the surface.  The deeper your roots penetrate, the stronger your grass will be.  If your grass begins to wilt slightly or does not bounce back quickly when stepped on, this is a sign that it is time to water again.

Aerate your lawn annually. Compressed soil prevents necessary nutrients and an accurate amount of water from getting down to the roots of your grass. Aeration increases water and nutrient saturation and boosts root growth.  It is recommended to aerate in the spring or early summer.

Professional Landscaping Companies ensure proper measures are taken

You always have the option of hiring a professional landscaper. Most areas have landscaping companies available which offer a program throughout the spring and summer months which include aeration, a fertilization and weed prevention program as well as will keep up with the weekly maintenance needed such as mowing your lawn and trim bushes and shrubs as needed.
