Latest Breaking News - Health - Viewing: Chiropractors And Physical Therapists....what's The Difference?

2010-04-19

The term chiropractic was coined from a Greek word that literally means "done by hand," which suggests that chiropractors are healing specialists using the hands-only techniques.

But what about physical therapists, they too use hands for treatment, right? How are they different from the chiropractors?

The most evident aspect that sets chiropractors apart from physical therapists is the spinal manipulation otherwise known as chiropractic adjustment.

Physical therapy, which commonly involves exercise and massage and passive stretching, cannot achieve the results that chiropractic can, such as activating the Golgi Tendon Organ, which requires the skilled manipulation of a chiropractor. GTOs are high-threshold joint receptors.

Chiropractors are chiropractic health care specialists that carry on a holistic approach in restoring the well-being of a person in a drugless and non-invasive manner. Holistic means that the treatment not only focuses on the symptom but rather it looks at the entire system to identify the root cause of the ailment.

Unlike physical therapists, chiropractors restore health with main focus on the human body frame or the neuro-musculoskeletal system of the body. Instead of restoring the normal functions of the muscles and joints through massage therapy and exercise, chiropractic concentrates on the bony frame of the central nervous system. Chiropractic care highlights the functions of the spinal column and how it affects the vital systems of the body.

A normal functioning spine entails the proper synchronicity of the movement of the vertebral bones and the interconnecting joints. Spinal nerves are like branches from the central nervous system that are responsible in sending neural messages to the various vital body parts.

And when a spinal nerve segment gets irritated by injury, imbalance in the muscles, or degenerative alterations, it will likewise affect the body part linked to that particular nerve segment.

Although at times chiropractors apply physical therapy techniques in their treatment scheme, the spinal manipulation technique makes chiropractors different from other medical practitioners. Chiropractic requires a combination of skills and knowledge, a professional chiropractor must have high-level biochemical understanding, anatomical knowledge, and a great skill in administering a spinal adjustment.

Although mainstream medicine strongly opposes chiropractic saying the practice is dangerous, chiropractors have remained steadfast with their "Do No Harm" motto. Administering an adjustment requires well-controlled force and speed in adjusting particular joints, just enough to apply the correction without causing harm to the patient.

Researches have it that chiropractic has been proven effective in treating back pains and deemed safer than other forms of medical applications.

To become a chiropractor, one needs at least 4 years of post graduate training. When choosing a chiropractor, make sure they are licensed in your state and have completed at least 4 years of study for maximum health benefits.
