2010-12-02

There was reason for celebration in the Carolina Panthers camp recently because after 15 seasons, the Panthers have scored a Pro Bowl touchdown. DeAngelo Williams gets the credit for becoming the first Panther's Pro Bowler to gain a touchdown. As you may know, Williams injured his ankle in the game against Minnesota back on December 20 and the Pro Bowl was his first time back in action since that time. You really couldn't tell it though because he had six yards on two carries and 15 on just one reception. Williams ran a seven yard score in the third quarter in the game held in Miami Gardens, Florida this past Sunday night.

Williams isn't the only player that's made headliner news for the Panthers this season though. The triple threat by the tight ends, being led by Dante Rosario was a concerted effort of all three to put the Panthers in a better position than they've been in an entire decade. Rosario led with 26 receptions and topped the league's top 30 with 313 yards. Jeff King scored three touchdowns in the previous season, making 2009 a career high because he matched two seasons prior. Gary Barnidge picked up 12 receptions, which gave him one of the highest first-down percentages for tight ends with no fewer than 10 receptions for 2009.

On the staffing side, the Panthers recently promoted special teams assistant Jeff Rodgers to special teams coordinator. Rodgers has six seasons of experience with the NFL under his belt as a special teams assistant although last season was his first with the Panthers. Head coach John Fox was quoted as saying, "Jeff is an outstanding young coach and I am confident he will do an excellent job." (Panthers com) Before joining the Panthers, Rodgers devoted his talents to San Francisco for four years and the University of Arizona for 2 years.
