Vendors of silica supplements often tell their prospective customers that one of the benefits that they stand to get through the use of the supplements is that of improvement with bone-health. As awareness about the role of silica in body continues to grow, we are seeing a trend where people struggling with various bone health problems are advised to try using silica supplements. The specific problems that can be addressed in this way vary from the ordinary bone weakness problems to the outright bone brittleness problems associated with osteoporosis. The prescription of a silica supplement as a possible cure to this problem is based on appreciation for the fact that one of the benefits associated with optimal silica levels in the body is better bone health. A scientifically minded person will, however, want to know the exact mechanism through which silica promotes such bone-health; which is the topic of our discussion here.

So, just how exactly can a silica supplement help you with bone health? What is its exact mechanism for working?

Well, what can be at a superficial level is that it is the optimal levels of silica in the body that the use of the silica supplement would give which would lead to your attainment of the better bone health. But at a deeper level, in order to understand how silica can possibly lead to better bone health, we would need to first have a basic appreciation of the roles played by silica in the body.

As it turns out, silica has a myriad of roles in the body. From being one of the components in collagen, to being an agent for the promotion of calcium-magnesium balance (which has an effect on hormonal balance), and onto to being a catalyst in many biochemical process that take place in the body, silica is a truly essential substance in the body. The specific role that makes silica suitable for the promotion of bone health is, however, that in which it promotes the mineralization of the bones. As we may recall, the specialized cells that make up our bones need a lot of minerals (like calcium) if they to offer the structural support to the bulk of the body, which is their main role. This mineralization of the bones is, however, not automatic. Just because there is a lot of calcium in the body doesn't mean that the bones will benefit from it. They need an agent to enable them obtain this calcium which is present in the body, and silica turns out to be one such agent.

It is therefore by encouraging bone mineralization that silica turns out to be an important agent in the promotion of bone health.

Silica is not a new drug made by some big pharmaceutical company, it is made by mother earth. Silica is an essential element in the Earth and as we are beginning to realize that it is just as vital to our health, and should be taken like any other vitamin.
