In our modern world we use our brain and our mind a whole lot more than we use our physical bodies. We are busy - often far too busy and cram our days and our schedules with so much 'stuff' that we do not have time for proper exercise for our own self care. Even our children spend a good part of their time and energy in sedentary activities like playing electronic games when years ago they rode bikes, played and sweated with enthusiasm. Watching television and using computers has turned into our main recreational activity as much for children as it has for adults. We live lives of little or no physical activity; a dangerous sedentary life. We know from constant research that vigorous physical activity increases our metabolism (our body's engine) and not doing enough muscle building and maintaining activity decreases it. When we stop using our muscles they become weak and flabby and when we use them for either manual 'work' or proper exercise they become stronger. Our body just adapts to what we give it or do not give it - existing conditions or our lifestyle. It may be a good thing to live our life without having to exert ourselves physically. We have become very comfortable in the fact that we can get through each day without literally having to 'move a muscle'. We sit for as much as 80 percent of the day, both at work chained to a desk or computer and back home again on the couch maintaining our addiction to television or a screen of some kind. Most of us have no idea this is harmful yet without vigorous movement that directly works our muscular system strength is siphoned away along with unused muscle tissue. This loss amounts to around one half a pound per year and this rate doubles after age 50. So by the time an adult reaches mid life as much as 50 percent of the bodies precious muscle tissue has gone down the gurgler. This change in our body composition which is our muscle/fat ratio not only robs us of our strength but lowers our metabolism allowing us to become overweight. It also weakens our immune system exposing us to preventable disease and premature aging. It has been estimated by the World Health Organization that between 60-85 percent of adults lead what is classified as sedentary lives. They have issued a warning that living this type of lifestyle could be one of the world's ten most important causes of disability and death. They are now calling it a disease with the new name of 'sedentary death syndrome' and if you are overweight and 'out of shape' you have it. But you can easily get rid of it too. Just 2-3 sessions each week at your local gym or fitness center doing a proper strength training program is all it takes to dig yourself out of this hole. Put some effort into it and in just a few weeks you will notice a difference to the way you feel and the way you look. Give it a few months of consistency and you will be almost brand new again and feeling a million bucks. So much easier than going down that other road to declining health and a potential shortened life span wouldn't you agree?
