2012-01-10

Doing business on the internet is a very lucrative venture, but there will be risks that are harder to avoid. To prevent yourself from falling to scams and fraud cases, there is a way to check if you stand a higher chance of falling into such cases, just by checking something called BIN numbers. BIN numbers stand for Bank Identification Numbers, they are the first six digits of the card, and checking them against the BIN checker will show you details and information on the buyer. This will help you decide if the deal that you have just made, is going to have a high or low chance of being a scam.

Use the BIN numbers to check what type of card the person is using. When you check the BIN number online, you will be able to tell if it is a credit, debit or prepaid card. This will help you more, then you know since different cards will expose you to different risk levels. You can always run a search on the internet, to find a website that will allow you to check these BIN numbers. There are some websites that are free, and you do not have to pay for using them.

However, I would advise you to check to see if the website, which you are using is up-to-date and has a big database. Please don't fall for websites that claim to have 100% of the cards in the world since that is not possible. Credit and debit cards are being issued every day, and there is no way any website will be able to do something like that. You will want to have a big database to check against because you will be able to see more information, on the cardholder.

When you have the Bin number to check against you will be able to tell if the person that is making the purchase is lying or not. For example, the person that is trying to make the purchase wants to send the product to Japan, but the card was issued in Germany and to top things off he is currently in France. Now looking at this in this context, it is very clear to see something is wrong. During the time you are trying to close the deal, you might not even notice this until it is too late.

Use the BIN numbers to your advantage and run searches on them, to find out the risk you will be taking. The banks have tried to make things safer, but there will still be an element of risk involved. It cannot be avoided, but it can be reduce before you start sending out your products, check the buyers BIN number just to be on the safe side.
