Latest Breaking News - Health - Viewing: Baby Boomers Don't Want To Get Old Anytime Soon

2010-03-28

The baby boomer generation is the largest population group in history, born between the years 1946 and 1964. They have always been trend-setters who have redefined economic trends and have caused a boom in almost every industry since their birth. The baby boomers are not so young anymore but, staying true to their generation's legacy, they are once again setting trends. They are redefining what it means to get - and be - 'old.'

Most of them have lived a carefree existence and a life of vitality and as they are now staring at retirement in the face they don't want it to stop. The old model of aging that the baby boomers parents endured it not appealing to them. They watched them become weak and helpless, often ending up in nursing home for the last 10 or more years of their life unable to take care of themselves.

The baby boomers know that no longer does aging mean that you can't be as active as you always have been. They will be doing everything in their power to stay strong and active as long as they can and are prepared to put time, money and effort into doing so. They realize that it is pointless owning a fifty thousand dollar car if your body is falling to bits from disuse and not doing enough strength building and maintaining activity.

They also understand that the key to a long and healthy life is to maximize what gives and supports this concept (proper exercise/quality nutrition) and minimize what will hasten departure from this world (a no exercise lifestyle/poor nutrition). Attaining longevity is only any good if you are fit and strong. Having to suffer through life with medical conditions is not the same as living a healthy long life.

Most of us would love to get to be 100 years old or more but the road to this is not predestined. We are not freely given that extra time we have to earn those extra years.

Crucial to the enjoyment of a long and healthy life is to overcome and reject the stereotype of ageism, frailty and inactivity, and, the only way to do this is to maintain and improve muscular strength right throughout the adult years with a proper exercise program that contains mostly strength training exercise.

Marketing data shows that many people still rely on 'cardio' type activity thinking this is all there is to fitness. But these types of activities however, do not have the youth enhancing, immune system boosting and body transforming effects of strength training. It is no wonder baby boomers are showing strong interest and are attending gyms and fitness centers all around the world.

Many age-related problems, such as muscle loss, bone loss, joint disease, decreased heart/lung function, immune system deterioration, mental decline and negative changes in body composition (muscle/fat ratio) are all directly countered by strength training.

Baby boomers facing the final third of life will continue to have to overcome roadblocks of limitations, losses and disabilities but these things can be countered when one is strong and fit. It is a big 'ask' to try and battle them when one is weak and suffering from loss of physical function from lack of proper strengthening activity.

Yes, strength training exercise has many benefits and will indeed give you a better all round stronger body that we all want no matter your age. You will be able to take on physical challenges - like playing sport if you so desire, climbing a mountain or even keeping up with the grandkids with greater ease and enjoyment.

The last third of one's life can be equally as exciting and full as the first two thirds, but you have to put some effort in now if it is to be lived with vibrancy and vigor- it will not just be handed out.
