There is an entire generation of people approaching retirement age around the world that have always lived a life of vitality and maintained a carefree existence and they don't want that to stop. They are now getting scared. Scared of becoming old and feeble and losing the independence they have always enjoyed. This generation was the first to really embrace the exercise wave that hit the world back in the eighties. Back then they did it to look good but they now are aware that to stay healthy as they traverse the aging process they need to have a proper exercise program firmly in place in their life. Many of these people wish to remain active in sporting activities and life in general and although the mind is willing it has to be remembered the body is getting older and it becomes easier to get injured unless it is kept strong. The way to keep all of the moving parts moving properly and problem free is with a program that contains mostly strength training exercise. It is important that the right exercise is done in preparation for staying really active and to remain as young as possible. Research shows that many people still rely on 'cardio' type activity believing this is all they need to do to remain fit. Cardio activity such as walking, jogging or cycling, however, does not have the youth enhancing and body transforming effects of strength training exercise. The most visible of age-related problems, such as the shriveling of the body from muscle and bone loss, joint disease, energy loss, decreased endurance and coordination along with mental meltdown are all directly countered by strength training exercise. Muscular strength and endurance significantly impact a person's ability to function at their full potential no matter whether they are performing daily tasks or playing sport. In this day and age, we have every chance of living longer, but what is the use of living longer if you are constantly sick, hunched over and parked in a chair all day watching television? Wouldn't it be more fun skiing, playing golf and tennis, swimming and tramping? The Baby Boomer generation still holds all the cards when it comes to economic and political power. They also hold the power to reject the stereotype that getting older does not necessarily mean ill health, weakness, frailty and inactivity. Crucial to the boomers enjoyment of their golden years is maintaining and improving muscular strength which will allow them to continue to pursue vigorous, active lives well into old age. Strength training has many benefits and will indeed give you a stronger, better looking and more disease resistant body. If you want to be a vibrant, youthful and vital person regardless of your age adding strength training to your exercise regimen will go a long way toward accomplishing just that. No, you won't ever look like Arnold, but you will become strong and very able to take on physical challenges. You will be blessed not only with an extension of years but an increased quality of life beyond your imagination and you will find yourself enjoying leisure activities that will amaze younger members of your family. Baby Boomers around the world will be silently saying to themselves "It ain't over yet, we are still the ones to watch".
