Latest Breaking News - Health - Viewing: Are Your Exercise Expectations Unrealistic?

2010-08-15

We may wonder why some people struggle to stick to an exercise program and other people cannot live without it. For some it is another obligation in an already busy world and when the going gets tough it is often the first thing that gets pushed to the bottom of the totem pole of priorities.

How do you feel about proper exercise? Is it a priority for you or do you wish it could be? After all you understand that your quality of life would be improved in so many ways if you could just stick to it long enough.

We humans are good at talking the talk. Talk is cheap and we need to walk the walk to get results. One way to ensure this happens is eliminating unrealistic expectations of what we want from our exercise program. There are few things in life that present us with such a distorted idea of what it should be doing for us than exercise.

Here are some of the unrealistic expectations that may be getting in the way of sticking with your program for the long term.

Do you expect?

1) To lose weight fast - like by next Friday? How is it that so many people expect magical results in just a few weeks of exercise and when it does not happen they give up?

2) Your program to be temporary - We look on it as a short term measure to lose some weight and tone up and then we can quit and somehow the results will stick.

3) That we don't need to address our eating - Somehow exercise is expected to do all the work on its own. Like what you put into your mouth doesn't matter. Well it does - big time. You have to be burning more calories than you are taking in if weight loss is your goal. This is best achieved by a healthy eating plan along with your proper exercise.

4) That all you need to do is some low intensity 'cardio' type activity and somehow this constitutes an exercise program. Well you are going to be very disappointed in your results. You need to be toning your muscles with strength training if you would like a strong, lean healthy body.

5) That exercise is going to be easy - If you want to change your body from a fat storing one to a fat burning one it will take some effort and consistency. You have to get stronger to become slimmer as that is the only thing that will boost a sluggish metabolism.

6) That you will be always motivated - Like anything motivation is something that you work on so you become better at it. It is not something you just have when you wake up one morning. It is up to each of us to keep ourselves motivated with whatever tools and resources we have at our disposal. None of us always feel like exercising or eating healthily, sometimes we have to dig deep.

Unrealistic expectations are just one way we can sabotage ourselves which will send our exercise program and healthy eating plan right back down the list of priorities and maybe off the 'to do' list altogether.

Keep the goals realistic and achievable. Remember the journey is made up of hundreds of small steps - it if not just a quick sprint and it is all over. Make each small step count and you will soon get there.
