It is strange that despite the well publicized risks of not enough physical activity for us humans a large segment of the world's population remains virtually inactive. It is estimated that between 60 and 85 percent of the world's population is not physically active enough to benefit from the health benefits that proper exercise provides especially amongst females of all ages

This has a ripple down effect to children and it is estimated that two thirds of children are also insufficiently active for their health. It is now predicated that children being born today will have a 20-30 year shortened lifespan. As sensible adults surely we would not be proud of leaving a legacy such as this to our grandchildren and great grandchildren.

The drastic reduction in physical exertion in our modern technological world has led to many physical, mental, and emotional health problems. Recent reports suggest these low levels of activity cascade through the population. Inactive children are at risk of poorer self-esteem, greater anxiety and higher stress levels and are more likely to smoke and use drugs than active children.

Inactive employees are less productive, suffer more stress and have more days off work than active employees. In later life, inactive people lose their basic muscle and bone strength and the entire body weakens and becomes susceptible to preventable disease. As a result, many cannot take care of themselves, lose their independence and have poorer mental and physical health.

Shouldn't we be finding ways to lead by example and become good role models for those following in our footsteps? Shouldn't we be accepting and teaching young people about the ultimate responsibility of caring for our own health? Ask yourself, "How much time do I spend sitting each day? Am I getting enough proper exercise to keep my muscles and bones strong? If not, what can I do to break free from my sedentary and inactive lifestyle?"

How hard is it really to make a bit of an effort and go to a gym 2-3 times each week to participate in a proper exercise program that contains strength training exercise? This is the only exercise that will address the muscle tissue loss of adults. The loss of one half pound of muscle tissue after the mid 20's is so serious that it causes premature and accelerated aging setting into place a downward spiral of declining health.

If you are new to exercise make sure you seek the help of a fitness professional to help you set up your program and to teach you to perform it correctly. Moving those muscles will improve your physical strength, stamina and boost your energy.

The more agile and mobile you are the greater your personal freedom and the more vigor and enthusiasm you will have for life and living. The greater your physical and mental strength and fitness the healthier you will be in body and mind which leads to a more optimistic, confident and positive outlook to make the most of your one and only life.
