Have you heard of something called the disability zone? This is a period in many people's lives (usually the last 10-20 years) where they no longer physically or mentally function properly on their own. We may know of someone already in this zone and it may even be one of our own family members. A health span is when you are fully functional and perfectly capable of performing the everyday tasks and activities of daily living. When functional capacity is high a person is self-reliant and capable of living independently. On the other hand, if that person enters the disability zone they become increasingly dependant on others. You may wonder how you reach this disability zone and how you can avoid it. The things that land you in the zone are decreased body strength and function along with health risks that lead to disease. Lifestyle habits in the years and decades before usually speed-up or can minimize and even reverse the length of time spent in this zone. Research has demonstrated over and over again that the decline of the human body is due not to the passing of years but to the combined effects of inactivity and poor nutrition that lead to health risks that promote disease and illness. But the very good news is that these very things can be controlled but they will need some effort from you which is not what most people want to hear. After all 8 out of 10 adults do not do enough proper exercise so clearly they cannot be bothered. But why would you want to avoid increasing the quality of your one and only life? Why risk years of pain, suffering, disability, and a much lower quality of life or even a shortened life for the satisfaction of sitting at a desk or on the couch for the majority of your life? It is so easy to increase the span of a healthy life. Proper strength training exercise is a major contributor to this goal as it keeps strength from disappearing which is crucial for health and successful aging. Living a no-proper exercise lifestyle is a major health risk and you can either accept that or ignore it at your own peril. But bear in mind that if you ignore it someone is going to have to pick up the pieces at the other end when you can no longer function on your own. What sort of legacy is this to leave to family, friends, your community and ultimately your world? Is it not a better option to take responsibility and pick up your own tab for your health and wellness right throughout your adult life? A program of strength training performed 2-3 times each week along with ditching non-nutrient processed foods in your diet would go a very long way to preventing you from ever entering the disability zone. This will give you many extra high quality years to enjoy the one ride we get on this merry-go-round that we know of as our life. Which choice will you make?
