This one area has a greater level of misunderstanding than any other topic that relates to health and fitness.

The first mistaken belief is that you can get rid of the fat around the mid-section by working the muscles there. Some people think that if you work the muscles in a part of your body you will lose the fat from that body part.

If that was so would you also lose the fat from on your legs if you use the leg muscles or your arms if you use your arms? Not so, any fat under the skin has to be processed by the body and glucose put back into the bloodstream and then taken up by the muscles to be burnt for energy.

The body decides where to put its fat stores and where and when to remove them and use them for energy. It has nothing whatsoever to do with what muscles you may be using.

Storage of fat on the mid-section is the very best place for the human body to store its extra energy supplies. It takes less energy to carry it around and it would not make good sense to store it on your hands and feet. You would have trouble moving them and it would require extra energy to do that.

If you want to reduce fat from your tummy the easiest way to get rid of it is to speed up your metabolic rate. The likely cause that you have become overweight is that you may not be using your muscles enough to maintain your metabolism (your body's engine).

So the first step is to get into the gym and rebuild and tone up your muscular system so it can slowly burn the fat from your body. Your muscles are the place fuel (calories) are burnt for energy so it makes good sense to get them in good healthy condition so they can work away for you chewing into that body fat that you are not happy about.

When you get your fat burning machinery boosted your body will start converting body fat into usable energy and fat stores will start to disappear from all over your body. But they will not magically vanish from any one particular body part. This means that there is no other way to reduce body fat than to take a whole body approach. It may even be that your abdominal area is the last place to slim down.

It is virtually impossible to lose body fat if you do not engage in proper exercise. That means strength training exercise as it is the only activity that will tone your muscles directly. They are the key to you losing fat and no amount of low intensity endurance type activity is going to be able to do the job. Keep recreational type activities (walking, jogging or cycling) as part of an active lifestyle but your proper exercise program is what is going to get and keep you lean, strong, slim and healthy.
